How come old suspension forks have the ribbed rubber things, and the newer ones don't?

Seals have improved. So there's no need for anything to keep the water away.

Also those rubber sleeves tend to hold in water causing seals and stanchions to degrade. I've pumped water out of some RST's I had after the sleeve had split.

They're old forks though? So you'd be better off keeping them unless you're a fair weather mtb'er. they're also handy if you're riding in abrasive soil.

It makes a kind of sense that it's cheaper to ship a 16" cube of Tungsten rather than 650 cubic yards of Silica Aerogel, even though each weighs 1 ton. In the case of a boxed up bicycle, the Volumetric Weight comes in at about 60-100kg depending on how much you dismantle it to get it in the box.
