• I'm thankful that we live within a state that is restrained by due process of law, and proportionate response to criminality. It may prove uncomfortable at times like this, but I'd take it over living in Syria every day of the week.

  • Endz are endz and man dem are bare man dem.

    There's a difference between authoritarian state and a just state. At the moment British sentencing isn't appropiate. Like I said, scum stab people and come out of jail before even family of the victim ends their grief.

  • Anything really.

    Social rehab doesn't have to be meaningless / soft touch. There are a shitload of things that need attending to in this country, many that would involve learning basic manual skills and applying them, working under supervision to help fix the country's transport infrastructure etc. Maybe it sounds a bit dodgy - chaingang or whatever - but doesn't that kind of thing:

    • keep you occupied
    • put a lot of energy and testosterone to good use
    • make you feel like you have a stake in the creation/maintenance of society
    • improve job prospects / personal development (if/when there are jobs again)

    Isn't that better than shooting them in the face?

    Yep, I agree 100% with this.

  • qwe

  • This so called 'rioting' is giving legitimate rioting a bad name. IMHO civil unrest should have some point to it, not just be some kind of mutant shopping spree. This is like watching a national 'toys out of the pram' tantrum. Get a fucking direction you tossers, you are spoiling it for the rest of us.

  • Interesting guardian article on the psychology of looting.

    "just because there is no political agenda on the part of the rioters doesn't mean the answer isn't rooted in politics."

  • Isn't that better than shooting them in the face?

    Categorically yes

    But is it done, though?
    And now the cuts...

    It has to be done - one or the other. Either tougher sentencing where appropiate or social rehabilitation. Both seem to be in shambles and effects of this we can see right now on our streets. It's not even a speculation anymore - just go out on the street.

    Well obviously it requires the rich to relinquish some of their wealth for the benefit of wider society.

    I have every confidence that will happen…

  • And I would like to see at least slapping in the face if there can't be shooting. Please! Or the ear pulling.

  •

Erm…

  •

Helloooooo, rich people…

  • Ear pulling might be a bit tricky to administer.

  •

Some money, please…

  • Issue is that you have to use the labour to do something worthwhile, which brings it into competition with other people in the workforce.

    Otherwise it's just make-work, and no one gained self respect from whitewashing walls over and over.

  • They were not affected by the riots. Not many of them on Pembury Estate.

    Need some help here…

  • Oh, if someone commited violent crime the they shouldn't be allowed out after two or three years. It doesn't make sense. People stab others and then are out on the street three years later. Fuck off! That's why they don't respect the law.

    I do have some sympathies with your views, but look at the US... and it's not like they have less violent crime.

    I don't have any answers.

    My suggestions would be;

    a) exporting large sections of our under-classes to Australia (a shining success story of exportation) (this also includes all those white-Sun-reading-lazy-builders);

    b) open small state run boarding schools, using extortionate amounts of money to remove some of the worst young people from their shitty areas and lack of parental guidance, coupled with mandatory hardcore parenting classes, and a program of relocation to random areas of the UK;

    c) jail anyone over the age of 17 for life as there is no hope for them;

    d) build huge swathes of small well funded schools with a large number of extra-curricula studies so the kids don't go home until 7pm and are exhausted. These schools should also have a policy of beating a liberal-social-concious-capitalist doctrine into all students;

    e) send half of them to Africa to work every summer (ideally not on local corrupt official's houses, but whatever);

    f) .... that's it for the moment.

    It's the endz of the world as we know it.

  • Well obviously it requires the rich to relinquish some of their wealth for the benefit of wider society.

    Erm, your plan (unless very carefully done) would take money from the working class, not rich people- your labour force are unlikely to be working in banking?

  • Hugo, I read what you wrote and what I can see is borstals and hard labour camps. I can work with it...

  • 1: Slightly racist
    2: Branding recognition fail: that's Sainsbury's

    I'm sorry I didn't realise Snoop Dawg was white
