PJs - I get why you can't do it..... and I hope your back gets sorted in time to make the most of this here festive season.
The Greenwich tunnel being out is a right pain in the arse. I never really go to that part of town (how do people generally get from Tower Bridge to say Milwall w/o cycling along the HWY?), but last night decided to cycle to the O2 from Barbican to watch some tennis.
So I get to the foot tunnel and its closed... turn back to get on a Clipper from Island Gardens across the river.
BOAT 1 would only let 6 bikes on ("thems the rules" the captain said) - I was about number 12 in the que.
BOAT 2 a smaller boat 10 mins later let no bikes on cause he was already carrying 4.
BOAT 3 (by this stage there was about 50 cyclists waiting on the wharf) let as many as reasonably safe on..... chapeau to this dude who used some common sense. So my little 40 min jaunt to the 02 turned into a circa 2 hour mission. If I'd known I was going to have to wait that long for a boat, I would have cycled back to Tower Bridge. £5.30 it costs to cross the farking river. Damn London transport. Damn there not being any ped/cyc
list bridges that far East.
I was a cold, grumpy and late cause of the tunnel being closed. Rant over.ANYWAYS, I'm down for whatever on Thus. Tron Square would be good.
There are pretty xmas lights around Sloane Sq too - far better than the dancing chillis they put up in Brixton. -

The Greenwich tunnel being out is a right pain in the arse.
The real problem here is that the DLR doesn't carry non-small folding bikes.
-
• #136
is it not possible to take the Rotherhide or Blackwall tunnel instead ?
They're only 4-5 miles away. Not too far.I have never used either tunnel so i wouldn't know if they're open at that time of night, but still worth a shout, seems the next best thing.

I've been through the rotherhithe tunnel, I wouldn't advise it.

The Rotherhithe Tunnel is fine if you're quick. The air gets a bit rubbish in there if you take too long. :)
-
• #143
you end up coming out the other end of the rotherhithe tunnel as high as a kite (mask essential). the blackwall is a no,no for bicycles.
-
• #144
^ Yeah thats what I thought.... I'd already tried to cycle down some underpass bit maybe the Limehouse link? Spotted a 'no bikes' sign just as I was about to enter and bailed last min - hence I didn't want to try my luck with rotherhithe or blackwall (not knowing for sure whether bikes were allowed). Does anyone cycle these parts regularly? I wouldn't mind tagging along some time to find get to know the best route. The HWY is SHITE and I seemed to be the only cyclist/idiot.
Should have just crossed at LB. South is Safe.
Gerald - where you been? -

Plus one to this.
Right, let's do this CM style then. I would point out that I got horrendously lost on this ride last year so will need clued up people to pull the route as we go. I love the idea of a meandering journey, taking in light up places such as Tron square / Regent's St etc as we get near them.
Will go and ask VB to change thread title.

Fuck it kattie, if we get near it, I am well up for leading this ride under the Thames.

...the blackwall is a no,no for bicycles.
Last summer I took an accidental left into Blackwall Tunnel, which as you say is definitely not for bikes. 'twas ridiculous move. We're not allowed in, for starters, and I'd think twice about entering even if we were.
That said, having made it through I found no easy return North, what with Greenwich foot tunnel being closed, so after an hour's faffing about by The O2 I took the plunge and went back through Blackwall tunnel.
Pillock.

I commute to Canary Wharf from Peckham on occasion. I don't use the Rotherhithe tunnel but bikes are allowed. Wisdom on Rotherhithe tunnel is that no one minds if you ride on the pavement really as pedestrians don't use it. If you ride on the road then you're best off during busier periods as cars won't mind you going 20mph in a 20mph zone with traffic in front and behind. However, at empty times cars will try dangerous things to get around you.
I tend to go Tooley Street to Tower Bridge, then I take the cycle highway on Cable Street all the way to Canary Wharf via Narrow Street. If you want to avoid the Highway just follow the superhighway markers. There are a couple of tricky bits but once you do it once it isn't too bad. The Cable Street cycle lanes are seperate from the road, and although I usually hate this (Torrington Place is hell on earth) I usually don't mind the Cable Street route.

Rotherhithe Tunnel. Safety in numbers. If we all stick together it really ain't a thang. Yeah it's grim in there but cover your mouths or something.
