Never cycled it but the Rotherhithe tunnel in an open top car was a pretty unpleasant experience. Downhill into the tunnel would be fine but can't think that slogging up the other side through that chewy air will be much fun. Might be ok late night with less traffic and bundling down en-masse should stop dodgy overtaking attempts from cars.

Taking an assertive position in the road soon puts paid to all but the dodgiest overtaking attempt.
You should be faster than the motorised traffic in any case . . .
Just ride the pavements, there's never any pedestrians down there anyway. The uphill side is less than fun, definitely one where the smokers will have an advantage since they're used to riding in 10% oxygen environments.

OK. Back in!!! Off to book afternoon hols.
Actually, not sure if possible given the original 50 spots had gone. Pajamas, can I get back in or not? Confused.

Wanda, I think its just a bit of a freestylin thing now - turn up, see where the night takes us.
-
• #158
shall we start a bit earlier (maybe meet at a pub??)
-
• #159
No, same meeting place, it's a winner and it means we start easily without having to corral people away from pints.
I am amenable to starting earlier though. Say 10?
-
• #160
yeah, I'm up for a rotherhirhe tunnel blitz
-
• #161
yeah good point masher
us southies can meet at a pub (coach and horses) for a feeder ride.

How much further than greenwich is the Woolwich tunnel?
Miss out the island, or go across Canary Wharf, then along the A13 borisway until we get there? -

How much further than greenwich is the Woolwich tunnel?
3 miles along the main road which is a bit grim, a lot more along the Thames path which is more pleasant. It's completely closed though so that's no help. The ferry doesn't run late. A group of 50 fixie skidders through Blackwall would get some rather unpleasant 5-0 attention. If you fancy 12 miles down to Dartford however they'll give you a lift across for free.

Thanks kattiep. As a ride newbie I think it's best I slide out of this one. Sounds way above my comfort zone. Next year.

@ cafewander, yes come along. I'm sure it'll be a fun night!
ALSO - CAN WE MAKE IT A SOCIAL RIDE? IE. NO SPRINGS THAT DROP PEOPLE OFF THE BACK PLEASE.
-
• #168
Forget the SPRINGS, it's SPRINTS that cause the problems. not that I mind sprints personally, or springs come to think of it.
-
• #169
This is on Friday the 3rd yeah? Not Thurs the 2nd?
-
• #170
The springs are a bloody menace, if you ask me. ;)

OK, I've been persuaded. Back in. Christ, I'd better roadtest the huge variety of gloves I have to find a combination pair/triple that works.
Friday as hols now booked.
Colleagues in the office shook their heads and smiled when I announced that I'm going riding with a "whole bunch of strangers" - again. Actually, you're not all strange. Apologies.
Keep those springs far away from me and I should be up for a sprint or two given that I'm missing hill crawls (running) that night. I can't call my attempts sprinting as my lungs won't work that well :-).
