  • I have a microwave with a built in oven & grill.

The microwave has a glass platter inside which says "microwave use only". If I remove it, the level of the wire grilling platform drops a couple inches, making it too far away from the grill for anything to cook.

Some of the cooking settings, use a combination of microwave, oven & grill. As we know, the food needs to be rotated to cook evenly in a microwave.

So im wondering, am I supposed to leave this glass platter in while cooking? There was no relevant info in the manual.

  • Does the grilling platform stand on the glass platter? If so, the grilling platform might also rotate whilst grilling giving an even grilling all round ... the glass platter would also catch the drips. However, I'd expect that the grill might radiate more heat onto the glass platter than it might expect to. I'd expect that if the glass was going to be susceptible under grilling, it would say 'Remove from oven during grilling' ... Hence, I'd just leave it in for grilling as long as it doesn't specify not to.

  • Thanks for the link, seems like it's going to be right pain, not to mention vertical dropouts for my single speed plans.

    what were you thinking?

ah well if you do want to s/s it you could put a sliding bottom bracket shell on:

..won't look out of place or anything..

  • My car has a HID conversion kit fitted to the dipped beam lights.

When leaving Souths the left light failed to illuminate.

What is the most likely point of failure- the ballast or the bulb?

  • @ rive gauche

i vow never to have a sliding bottom bracket, ever. HA!

it may be more complex than that

  • I need a new crankset.
    Do I get:
    a) an Eighth Inch crankset for £65.
    b) Andel track for £72 plus postage.
    c) Sram S100 for £57 + truative BB for £15
    d) Sram S300 for £80, including external BB.
    ????????

  • SRAM S300 - you don't realise how floppy square taper spindles are until you upgrade to an external bearing crank. Winstanleys have them for £75 with free delivery, making it an even easier choice. The S100 uses Truvativ's proprietary Powerspline BB, so I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole as you never know when they're going to stop making BBs for them.

To clarify - the car in question is a 1996 Volvo, and the lights have worked very well for the past year.

  • cheers mdcc, couldn't have asked for a better reply.

  • i think they can be popped out. they're for keeping the axle forward.

  • thanks very much, i thought as much but better safe than sorry.

  • Need to unlock a PDF file.

Are these free online downloadable efforts any good?

    How can this be done.

Off to rant thread to shout about why excel is better than PDF.

  • For the engineers out there, I have just been accepted to two assessment centres which are clashing and so I have to chose 1. They are 2 very different jobs, one as a field engineer drilling holes for oil and gas and the other would be a design engineer designing and analysing stuff that goes 1000s of metres under the sea in horrendous conditions etc.

The field engineer position is for a company called Schlumberger who are a oil and gas services company that basically come along and make big holes in the ground for BP and shell etc etc. Could end up getting posted anywhere in the world but work conditions aren't meant to be the best and job security can be dependent on the markets.

The design engineer position is with a company called FMC technologies. The job will be based in Dunfermline in Fife, it will be a normal working week 9 - 5 stuff and with the added chance to travel.

I'm struggling to chose at the mo, I have already spoken to both parties and there are no additional assessment centres so it's really a matter of choosing. What the fuck do I do?

  • I know this doesn't help but whatever you chose it will be the right choice.
Good engineering jobs are very scarce at the moment, so well played to have two options.

I've a friend who's worked with Schlumberger since he graduated, in 1990. He did a few years in their marine division and then transferred to their IT function due to a health problem. He's been waiting to be made redundant for the past 8 years or so but is still there.

I lived in Dunfermline as a kid, and we've long standing family friends from there, I'd be in no rush to go back.
