  • Thanks soul - that would fit the bill I reckon. When you say decent(ish) what does that mean exactly!? Would you reccomend holding out for something second hand on ebay or the classifieds here, or just going for those? They are pretty cheap...

I just got outbid on these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270625388098&ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT. Liked the look of 'em!

Its kinda hard to get used to what things are worth in this game... although quickly becoming absorbed in the world of fixies!

  • The ones on Planet X are better than the ones you linked on eBay.

I say decent (ish) because, as always, you get what you pay for. They are decent for £100 but they aren't as buttery smooth as a pair of Mavics / open pros with Royce hubs. But they might set you back £350, easily.

  • Thanks man, I'm going for it!

  • What about the guy on here (Varno?) selling wheelsets, pretty sure they're fixed/free hubs. Seems like a good guy too

  • For the engineers out there...The design engineer position is with a company called FMC technologies. The job will be based in Dunfermline in Fife, it will be a normal working week 9 - 5 stuff and with the added chance to travel.

I'm struggling to chose at the mo, I have already spoken to both parties and there are no additional assessment centres so it's really a matter of choosing. What the fuck do I do?

Choose FMC, will be expanding big time after the BP subsea disaster. Schlumberger's a good solid firm, but field engineering is more and more being subbed out to 2nd world outfits.

  • hahahha

  • Choose FMC, will be expanding big time after the BP subsea disaster. Schlumberger's a good solid firm, but field engineering is more and more being subbed out to 2nd world outfits.

What do you mean by 2nd world outfits? Schlumberger is a services company that drills the holes for the operators such as BP and Shell, it's the biggest in the world as far as I'm aware. So field work is already getting subbed to Shlumberger, have I got the wrong end of the stick.

  • Well it seems I've solved my little problem, the SLB assessment was supposed to be done over 2 days with the second day an individual interview which they now have moved to day 1 for me. I can now go to both assessment centres, woohoo, hopefully my next question will be who to work for!?!?

  • balance bewteen, "you like what you do" and "money"

  • Ok, so I'm planning on building up my first wheel soon, I've had a read of Sheldon and I think I know what I'm doing, kind of.
I'm thinking of getting a Shimano Tiagra 4500 hub and a Mavic A119 rim. I've used Ehren_fried_chicken's spoke length calculator which suggests a spoke length of 296.1.
So my question is: Does that 0.1mm matter? What I mean is can I get away with spokes that are 296mm, or should I go for 297mm?
I don't want to fuck this up before I've even started building...

  • 0.1 is nothing, take the 296 and you will be fine

  • Cheers Rik!

Not sure what happened to my post up there ^, the links are all messed up, but look fine when I go to edit them :s

  • why is it common for messenger bags to be left shoulder?

  • 'cause that's what's most comfortable (adjusting and slinging) for right handed people

  • Why are some manhole covers round?

  • They're not always.

  • Because some men are round, see above.

  • To get a whole man down?

  • I have coaster brake hub, its 120oln, I want to put it on a mountain bike. Should I cold set the rear stays (its steel) from 135 to something less, or space out the hub? It may have already been spaced out from 110. I don't want to have to dish the wheel loads. x

  • Spacing it doesn't affect the dishing, unless you also need to change the chainline.

  • What is the benefit of Biopace chainrings? My new road bike has Shimano ones. I can't feel any difference to regular rings but then again this is my first geared/freewheel bike, so I don't have much to compare to.

  • Why does my 50's frame have a smaller than British BB thread,
it seems less, cannot put British one, what size could it be instead?

  • @ maxcrowe, did know the answer to that one many years ago... Shall try;
hmmm, might be those chainrings are oval in shape, so makes it easy to push,
as the shape gives extra torque on the down stroke, is this right?

  • Sounds about right. Yes, they are oval in shape. Very much 'not round'.

  • ^good for climbing with.
