Fair points. I think it's only happened once to that extent, to usually when I'm in a hurry to get out the door, drop the wheel for whatever reason and... Shit. I've never quite worked out a way to make them impervious to water ingress, though in truth it's never caused me problems from memory. The current solution is sugru to smooth the join and wrap in gorilla tape. Just thought there might be a better alternative I'm missing (like the fancy son coaxial connectors).
@hippy are you saying the SP connection is fairly loose? The shimano seems a bit stubborn at times which would be a bastard with cold hands and a puncture to fix.

Yeah, my SP ones always just disconnected when I dropped the wheel out after forgetting the dynamo (which was always because I was too busy swearing at the puncture to think about two stage wheel removals).

Dyna snaps. Not cheap but.

I would like to add a coaxial y junction for a charger of some sort to my dynamo setup.
I have a son28 with supernova e3 front and rear. I'm thinking I'd like to keep the electronics in a frame bag. 1 charger, 1 powerbank.
Is it possible to hook this up so that it works at the same time as the lights or is it either or?
If it's impossible to get both going at the same time I guess a y junction isn't necessary. Just a coax connection so that I can switch. Where on the cable would this connection have to go? Between the hub and the front light? Or anywhere? -

Spa Cycles have PL-7 for £126. Anyone seen any cheaper options?

What about shimano for under 100?

Simply because I know my SP works and buying the same brand hub as my 700C wheels, should, at least in theory, mean the disc rotor will be in the same place.
What's the actual dynamo performance of Shimano like compared to SP and SON?
-
• #1709
In that case, best I can do is £104 for the SP.

Where from?

Sent you a PM (I'm not just being awkward)

Spa Cycles have PL-7 for £126.
Anyone seen any cheaper options that hippy can buy online for London delivery?
-
• #1714
What if there's another shop worth supporting that are selling them cheaper?

• #1715
Yeah, cheers, I was a bit short - I'm normally fucking broken Monday mornings. Two coffees isn't cutting it. Where's the vodka. I should've known you were being funny.

Ah yes, ISIS. Renowned for their dynamo lighting.

Just steer clear of their BBs

I
kindareally hate Son’s cable doodads...

That's an unfortunately failure mechanism. Try a dab of grease in the female spade next time. it makes it a lot easier to get them on and off. I also try to take them off by pushing from the bottom rather than pulling from the top.
You could consider the coaxial adaptor too if you're taking the wheel in and out a lot.

Here is the most informative article on topic of dynamo hubs performance I have ever seen: https://www.cyclingabout.com/dynamo-hub-power-drag-testing-schmidt-son-shutter-precision-shimano/

Thanks I'll have a read.

• #1723
TLDR: Son hubs have the lowest drag but consequently less light/power output, Shimano provide lots of power but are very slow, SP somewhere in the middle, best light/power output of the hubs above 20kmh but not great drag wise

Any idea if they're any good? Tempted by the 26" for an MTB build I've got brewing.

So, no reason not to buy an SP hub. Which is good, coz I've just bought an SP hub ;)
It's a fairly benign failure mode. The alternatives are breaking the cables or having the weight of your dynamo front wheel suspended by some rather fragile cables. I think it's worth considering what the better alternative would be in the event that you do forget.
