Maybe the TCR needs a TDF style caravan that precedes it, on all possible routes, killing dogs it encounters.

That's actually kinda true. It was more that less sunscreen required.
I still like to wear a cap most of the time, at least until it gets quite hot, like into the 40s.

I think you'll find no one here agrees with that point. TCR is a SELF-SUPPORTED race. It's is about the rider planning, preparing and executing that plan for the duration of the course. As 'unlucky' as he was, Neil's failure to prepare accounted for the majority of his problems.

Full credit to him for keeping going, and I can understand a bit of a meltdown in the mountains after extreme tiredness and some dog attacks, but now seems a good time for you/him to wind it in and take stock rather than complain online.

Per the first line of the TCR website “The TCR is the definitive self-supported bicycle race across Europe.” Sounds like your mate Neil should have done more research. Maybe even have visited the website once or twice.

Next time he should take a book with him, for all the downtime off the bike.

If @Lastmanstanding really is Neil Matthews I'd have to say what a depressing ending to an otherwise inspiring performance...

If however, it is not, then can the real Neil Mathews come forwards, thank the forum for it's continued support over the last few weeks, personally referencing @hippy 's PR advice and then finish with a brief bit about how the self supported nature of the race and the challenges it entailed were what made it so special and how you will be back again next year drenched in suncreme and determined to finish with the cap firmly affixed to your head...

In isolation, of course a stolen hat is no game-changer, but when it leads to sun stroke, which leads to riding nocturnally, which not only leads to the aforementioned dog attacks, but also reduces his TITS to the levels of your average commuter cyclist, then it's a pretty big deal.

Anyway, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Have a look at the attached - He had to contend with a hurricane, plus multiple lightning strikes. With not a dickie bird by way of warning from Race Support (or the Dot Watchers, I might add). It's a good job he had the presence of mind to check into that hotel, or we could have been looking at a fatality.
