  • Finally pulled the trigger on a pixel 1. Considered others at same price point but none were as well speced.

  • Got the nougat update last week, completely borked my sd card and subsequently all the apps that were stored on it stopped working, backed up and factory reset then realised a hadn't backed up any sms. Any ways of restoring them or are they just all gone, first couple of pages of google juts shill some bullshit software that doesn't work

  • Well, I replaced my screen. Unfortunately the instant I applied a tiny - I mean tiny - bit of pressure to glue the new screen in it cracked! Only at the border though, so the screen is still usable. It' also not sitting flush in its housing. All around disaster. Can only assume that I applied too much glue or something?

Will persist with this one for now but my weather sealing is going to be shite and I don't expect the screen to survive long given that it's not flush.

Quite sad. Can't afford to be throwing away money like this at the moment. New phone goes on the list of things I'll treat myself to when I get a Real Job.

Edit: Ooh, forgot, photo attached. This is what I've been using the past month!

Edit: and aside from my whinging and botched install it's pretty easy to do. Saved £50 vs. what the phone shop man wanted. Took about 45 mins.

  • If the screen isn't sitting flush, that normally means something hasn't been put back quite right.

Probably a bit of a pain to take it all apart again though.

  • Yeah, thinking maybe too much glue and not enough of the old glue/glass removed. Definitely can't take it apart again now that it's got the crack in it, it'd shatter into bits when I try to remove it. Might buy another one, we'll see

  • Looking around at the moment for a phone to replace my battered but very serviceable Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 that has served me for about 3 years. Budget around £150, but can push a little bit.

Torn between the Moto G6 and Honor 9 Lite from John Lewis at £149, but I've noticed this place called Toby is selling the Google Pixel at £205, although it looks like they're new I don't think they come from the EU and have no clue about their warranty.

  • edit: forget me - you got it above

  • I haven't looked to see how big of a problem but there are reports of the Pixel suffering from bootloops. Having had my main board on a 5x replaced free of charge by LG I would be loath to buy a grey market import of a device with potentially known hardware faults

  • Oh really? Cheers. Obviously it's two years old but I still get the impression it's a decent phone. That being said I'm more interested in the other two, particularly as John Lewis have a two year warranty included as well.

  • @hippy and others

what android phone is pretty robust (or goes in a solid case) - water resistant would be nice -, takes micro sd and has good battery. possibly some sort of fast charge?
decent camera would be nice too.

  • I use a Samsung XCover 4

    https://www.samsung.com/uk/smartphones/galaxy-xcover4-g390f/

    It's IP68 and MIL-STD 810G.

It's not as fast as my Sony and the screen is bigger so the battery life probably isn't as good but it's been pretty good. I bought it for racing but it's been my daily phone since I killed the Sony after TABR last year.

  • that looks pretty perfect (and well priced).
Does it do any sort of fast charging?

    is the camera any good.

  • I'm using the S9 with quad lock and poncho, have a 128gb sim in it for offline maps, takes amazing photos. Also IP68.

  • LOL £800

    I aint pro bro.

  • Decent package through work! :)

  • the only perk of my work is saddlesores oh and a suntan.

  • It's normal USB, not USB C so probably just normal charging. I'm not sure.

Camera is good enough for a phone but not as good as the Sony.

Almost all of these for the last 18 months would be from it:

  • my work

    get in the sea :P

  • xiaomi redmi note 5ai global 4/64Gb is in your budget. Amazing phone for money, I even like it more than nexus 5x it replaced after bootloop saga. You can get it from aliexpress, gearbest, eglobalcentral, ebay for £150-170 roughly

  • Do have Prime, out of stock though. Pah. Edit: duh

With the Redmi Note you're not gonna get much warranty wise, are you?

  • Don't be in any hurry to sell your soul to the corporate machines. Much rather be cycling in the mountains, saddle sores and a decent tan anyday than stuck behind a desk in a rutt.
