It was a moving programme. (Too much Carthy though) good to hear he got his voice back and his son plays guitar like him.

The son did a good job, not easy. Inspired me to have a crack at Canadee-i-o.

You're right, the programme was a bit heavy on the Carthy. Huge respect to him and all that but I'm not sure he's really a big Nic fan. (I find it hard to listen to Carthy because of his vocal style of pausing momentously on the last... word. Martin Simpson caught that habit bad.)

Nic Jones' style for me has that classic modal approach but with an almost John Martyn-ish groove, plus the way the words float back and forth... magical.

Yes I agree with that. It is hypnotic. He managed to create a drone sound with alternating base and his voice. His earlier album Ballads and Songs is my favorite especially this :

I have mixed feelings about Carthy. I really want to like him but I just don't really get on with most of his stuff either.

You should listen to his earlier stuff too. Magical.

I know what you mean about Carthy. Apart from his voice deteriorating of late his Guitar style is quite amazing, unique in its sparsity . He leaves a lot of spaces and uses silence and single notes while playing and singinging. Unlike Simpson who (over-) embellishes his playing making him sound too flash.

Nic Jones did something altogether fresher in the folk scene with laying down a drone beat and blending his voice in and out of that as you mentioned above Dooks. If he hadn't crashed who knows what heights he would have reached

I think it was Rickster who made the astute comment on his style. I tend to agree though, it's the relaxed, easily confident swing of it that puts you in mind of Martyn I think. Sounds so effortless.

I can't stand those virtuoso guitar hero mag fokies like Simpson. Yuk.

Luke Concannon is touring (of Nizlopi Fame)

I have seen Nizlopi play twice, probably the best live shows I have ever seen. Excellent at playing the crowd, especially in a small venue.

Not sure how it is going to be without the other chap playing double bass and beat boxing ( a big part of the act he was) But ticket prices are only about £7 and he is playing small venues.

Went to the launch of Andrew Weatherall's new label Moine Dubh tonight, utterly stunning folk music was showcased.

On the off chance, don't suppose anyone reading here plays (or knows someone who plays) folky/bluegrassy violin and fancies hooking up to play with a couple of enthusiasts of no professional ambition but lots of enthusiasm for music, beer and knitwear?

I'm actually here bumping this thread to say: Leon Rosselson is playing this Sunday a newly started folk night at The Amersham Arms in New Cross. Never seen him before but thought I'd go along. @Oliver Schick @digger Anyone else fancy it?

Also if anyone wants to see some dancing 'Thrales' team of Rapper are out in Soho over this weekend making nuisances of themselves in pubs...

In like Flynn. I saw him (with Robb Johnson) at a Genoa benefit gig at a squat in Hackney years ago. I actually checked his web-site a little while ago as he was releasing a new record, but he hadn't announced any London gigs yet then. He's written a lot of fantastic songs, most prominently 'The World Turned Upside Down', but also gems like 'Don't Get Married' (although I doubt he'll play that on Sunday). Is early booking advised?

That would be great, if you haven't already done so, but I looked and didn't manage to find an on-line ticket buying mechanism. Have you found one? This suggests they haven't set up anything (I actually prefer turn-up-and-pay-at-the-door), but early turning-up will undoubtedly be required.
