I had a nice conversation with a police lady from the forensics dept. last night. She was trying to get fingerprints from a crowbar that was found outside our flat (to no avail). I learnt that it's extremely hard to make evidence stick. Even if you find prints or DNA at the scene, it won't stand up in court because it's a communal area, and the thief could argue that they were there by chance.
From personal experience, they will charge if they get print or DNA. A thief who I caught in our block (neighbours bike recovered with prints) was charged and convicted.
Unless they live in your building there is no reasonable explanation as to why they were in a secure communal area in your building. They might try to claim it is a communal area, but unless they can explain why there DNA would be in a room which they do not have access to it would not stand up in court.
In my case, once they revealed they had prints the guy pled guilty in court.
Sorry to hear, it is never a nice thing to deal with. FWIW I got our freeholder to fit a hasp and massive combination padlock after the above incident. I also lock our bikes with a d-lock and one massive motorcycle lock around all the bikes. Fortunately I live in a small block and my bedroom is next to the store so I heard them. If you live in a bigger block it would be much more difficult I guess if the store is not in close proximity to your flat.

Really sorry to hear this, extremely frustrating! Sadly it is a common story, communal areas in blocks are watched and targeted.
If you tweet us, we will RT the details! - the @StolenRide community will do what it can.
We have lots planned this year in terms of prevention and recovery + will be kicking up a media storm about stolen bikes - we will do what we can in London & will be asking all London cyclists for ideas and support.

I'm afraid it wasn't this bike. The time machine I saw is all stealth black decals including on the wheels, and according to @Mancini it has been knocking about green lanes in its current setup (flat pedals) for ages

saw a guy riding round peckham on a bike that looked much much too small for him, no helmet, ruck sack on.
Bike was a team sky pinarello dogma, with 6800 groupset, yellow accenting.
Bike like this one (but not it)

no helmet, ruck sack on
Is that all it takes to raise suspicion?!

'on a bike that looked much much too small for him' - that was what raised suspicion.

Tonight my best bike was stolen, between 6.30 and 8pm at the crossroad between Goswell Rd. and Friend St, near Angel station. I think I am still in shock, tomorrow I'll probably have a breakdown...
It was my heart and soul, all parts sourced and built by myself: Dark Grey 54 square Ciocc Frame, Columbus Nemo, full 10v campa Record, H+ Son on Hope hubs.
Very loud distinctive freewheel noise, bloody beautiful.
Please help me, I think I might die... -

Just to follow up from my previous post about my stolen Ciocc...
This morning I headed down to Brick lane market to see if I could see my bike or parts of it for sale. As soon as I get there I see my wheels for sale at the stall by the gates, first one on the left as you walk in the fenced area. Called the police, the guy smells trouble, get rid of the wheels before the police comes. Got home with nothing but anger.
Dont mean ti nag but hopefully this will help other people. Do try to look for your stolen bike in Brick lane, the stolen market is still very active despite everyone knowing the illicit trade. You need to be there before 9am, hot bikes go quick.
And please, do not buy from this stall. (it's the one who normally has a lot of lights) This person has been selling stolen goods indisturbed and clearly has some good contacts with thieves. Quiet clearly though, police is powerless against it... 😢 -

Last night some friend had bikes stolen from their building in Hackney on Wick Lane. Theives broke into a "secure" lock up area and sawed through the locks.
Genesis Day One Afine 8, White with blue letters, Size 52 with Brixton Cycles decal on the seat.
Genesis Equilibrium 10 2015, Blue and black with yellow details, Size 54.
Please let me know if anyone sees anything around looking suspect.
Pendleton Initial, with Shimano Claris Wheel Set.
You have a point. I'm going to claim my housing association has liability for being negligent in providing shitty lock-ups. But I've not idea whether it'll wash.
