Road Wheels & Road Wheel Recommendations?

  • Again, YMMV, tyres does make a difference too, high quality one can be ridden at a slightly higher PSI (such as Vittoria Corsa CX).

Just play around and go for what feel best, bear in mind I don't associate road buzz = speed anymore hence the lower PSI.

  • I've got open corsas on at the moment so might try something in between

  • 80 front 85 rear 17,5mm internal 25c schwalbe one 66kg

  • I need to pick up some basic otp training wheels. Considering Fulcrum a Racing 5 or DT Swiss R24. Anything else in that price range (circa £180) I should be considering?

  • Racing 5 LG,might as well have wide rims. Or if you ride God's own groupset these are cheap.

  • What are my options for a good mid range road wheelset tubeless ready (no holes in the rim bed) with 24 to 35mm depth and modern wide rim width? The Dura-Ace C24-TL just doesn't have the wide rim aspect but I can't think of any other option atm

  • I'm considering a set of wheels from Superstar.

A couple of their standard builds look really tempting: the Pacenti SL23 on Icon Ultra hubs, or the Arc22/Arc31 on Icon Ultra.

In fact, both seem almost too good to be true. Is there a catch here? I've read varying reviews online in terms of build quality - but at the price I could easily afford to have them trued by a local builder.

Some other thoughts: I'm 70kg so their 20-24 standard build is probably a sufficient number of spokes; I would consider asking them to substitute brass nipples instead of alu to add some durability.

@miro_o I understand you have some wheels (or at least rims) from them - any thoughts? Thanks.

  • You're 70kg, you're most definitely lighter than the average in the UK.

I too is going for the Arc31 wheelset as on paper it sound great, normal J bend spokes, novatec hubs (cartiridge bearing FTW), freehub body are obtainable.

  • Sadly I've not ridden mine yet. Out the box they look good, are true and round (as you'd hope) and there are no 'pings' when I throw them around my kitchen...

They're light (Arc31 set is 1605g with tape).

...at the price I could easily afford to have them trued by a local builder.

I know people who've done this with direct-from-china carbon and it's not a great way to go. A badly built wheel will frustrate it's owner and re-builder – better just to buy the parts, lace it yourself and get a trusted LBS to build it up.

  • Thanks, that's useful.

I take it you stuck with alu nips? No concerns?

  • They're cheap race wheels so I'm ok with alloy nips on these.

Mine have Laser spokes. I'd go for Race (or splash out on the extortionate CX-Rays) if I'd had a choice.

  • Gotcha.

Definitely tempted by the rims - will consider having the build done locally (or lacing them myself as you suggested). One to mull over.

  • BHS sell the asymmetric rear rim.

I'm thinking about building one up with a powertap.

  • If I went rim-only I'd be tempted for 24/28, brass nips, 2 cross front/ 3 cross rear (or similar, to the builder's advice) to add some durability. Keeping the rim weight down is nice, but overall wheel weight isn't something that bothers me too much.

Is there a UK distributor other than Superstar? I'm guessing ordering direct from BHS comes with all the fun of customs-bingo and expensive shipping.

  • Looking for a new set of rims (road) to go on Ultegra 6700 hubs - old rims are FUBAR after hitting a bloody great pothole. Recommendations for an 85kg rider for commuting (usually carry 5kg of shite to) and a wheelbuilder?

    Work in Great Portland Street

  • Sounds good. Go for Race spokes then.

Is there a UK distributor other than Superstar?

    Not AFAIK.

  • It's worth reading a bit here:
    http://www.lfgss.com/conversations/128002/

...but to save time... H+Sons Archetypes, and Justridingalong or your LBS.

    IMHO etc.

  • That'll do the trick! Ta

  • Only in 32.... I guess "Liefertermin unbekannt" means out of stock?

  • Also does anyone have a recommendation for light disc rims that can take 25mm tyre? Ideally slightly wider / 23mm.

Stan seem to have lots of offerings, but I'm confused as to which can you take narrower road tyres and which ones are wider.

  • If going for superstar, use 10k code. 10% off on everything till end of june. :)

  • Great Portland St. - get to Fitzrovia Cycles. They should be able to sort you out. They carry a decent stock of rims too so can usually do wheels quickly.

  • How light?
I'm super happy with my belgiums(470g). They're really great and strong.

Or stans crest (360g). Had them before. Not as up to punishment (would need tuying more often) but good rims.
