Yup they can.
They're good rims. Just get a good builder to put them together. I've realised its all about the quality of the build. I've smashed my belgiums so much but they're perfect true still. -

You don't need 120psi if that what you mean.
70psi rear and 50psi front with 28mm work for me.

Pacenti cl25 from Planet X - 28 hole only but great rims and only £30
-
• #4930
Yes Scobes, I know, but even 70psi is quite a bit more the 25psi mtb

I think quite a few on here have run Crests at road-ish pressures without issue.
AFAIK it's Iron Cross that really, really will not take more than 40psi in any tyre config.

I have some 28h Pacenti Sl23's on Volta hubs from Superstarcomponents. Solid wheels and sweet rims. Pain in the ass to mount tyres to though. Would've bought their ARC wheels if i was looking for a set of wheels today. Also the rim tape they use on their prebuilt wheels is shit. Too narrow and thick.

Selling some brand new Fulcrum Racing 7 LG (wide rim) Wheels with a campag freehub in here if anyone is interested:

Its because they assume you run wide tires and label max pressure accordingly.
Mavic do the same with their mtb/touring rims, so out of the box you think 60psi is max, but it changes if you put a narrow tire on it.
This chart is for their A319 rim

Second that about the tape; it's beyond useless. I did have a moan to superstar and they said they would consider the feedback they're getting about it when they come to order more tape. If anyone else is finding the tape shit they should have a moan too.

That's a pressure chart for different tyres, not for a specific rim. You can't even mount a 50mm+ tyre on an A319.

Do you even 90's MTB?

How light?
I'm super happy with my belgiums(470g). They're really great and strong.Or stans crest (360g). Had them before. Not as up to punishment (would need tuying more often) but good rims.
Weight isn't the be all and end all, but as you can get rim brake rims for c.450g I guess I'd like less from a disc brake rim.
That said it would be an all-rounder. Ideally low/box section style, probably in a 32h build so I don't know if I should care that much.
The PX pacenti look like a very good option. Hed. I think would be a bit too pricey.
What exactly makes the Crest need pampering? To the best of my knowledge all of my wheels have stood the test of time and the last couple I've tensioned them more or less equally from the start. That said I've yet to try bling spokes in low counts at uber tension. But I'm guessing a disc build is pretty much the same as a standard road build - just maybe stronger nds front spokes possibly at higher tension??
Anyway it's all a bit hypothetical at the moment.

Oh and on superstar I just noticed they have a alu tubular set:
http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/dt-swiss-pave28-wheelset.htm
Just thought I'd mention it as I know tub people often complain about the lack of decent modern alu rims/wheels with a machined brake track.

What exactly makes the Crest need pampering?
That stem from NoTube saying that those specific rims aren't designed for high pressure tyres, and narrower tyres may not mount well due to the extremely wide internal width (21mm).
-
• #4941
So the rim isn't that stiff and running them at high pressure compresses the rim reducing the spoke tension and making them go out of true?
Is that on 32h builds or just lower spoke counts?
-
• #4942
Given I'm not that light and I might use 23-25mm tyres the pressure is going to be at least 80psi on the rear, if not more like 90psi.

What exactly makes the Crest need pampering?
lightweight, no eyelets, factory QA aint great - less round out of the box.
At a guess.
-
• #4944
No the rims is very thin and designed to be ridden with an MTB tyres that typically run at 30-40psi, NoTube was afraid that putting smaller tyres that required a higher pressure to perform well will likely cause the tyres to pop out or damaged the rims.
With ZTR Crest, I would recommend a minimum of 28mm, at that size, it look exactly how a 23mm tyres look on 17mm internal rims.
-
• #4945
So in terms of tyre hight it's unlikely that there would be clearance issues?
For 28mm tyres I'd be happy to hover around 80psi max on the back I reckon.
no eyelets
Not a huge believer in eyelets. Although aesthetically I do like sliver eyelets on black rims :)

Oh and cheers for all the feedback everyone.

Cheers.
Time to make a list I guess.

I'd get crests.
I ride my bike hard and I also think mine weren't built super. So my opinion is more the wheel build and not the rims themselves.
Crests are about £45 I think and they're as light as you'll get. Tyres might be a bitch to get on first time but once they're pumped up and attached you can do it quick next time.

• #4950
I'd heard the same, but mine seems fine.
Perhaps they've changed it?
I didn't think Crests could take road pressures?
