  • Anyone know anything about frame locks(like the axa defender/solid, trelock, abus amparo). I have noticed a couple of different style keys and reviews of the older ones say they had issues in the netherlands. I figure it's a 1up from security bolts but that they are less annoying and I can use regular tools on my bike still.

    Just an idea at the moment but planning to order some pannier baskets from germany and figured I could get the locks at the same time.

    is there a fork like this:

    • A-C 395mm
    • 1 1/8" Steerer
    • 50mm diameter at crown (for that smooth look with internal headsets)
    • Straight tapered legs
    • Aluminum or steel
    • Disc brake mount only
    • Mudguard mounts
    • Low rider mounts
  • The only straight steel disc forks I can think of are ones on a Genesis CDF, but I don't think they sell them seperately. Lynskey did one that might be right

  • The Van Nicholas VNT SLX CX fork fit everything bar the low rider mounts.

    The idea is fitting my fixed gear bike (running on a carbon CX disc fork at the moment) with a front rack, for more functionality.
    The fork only has eyelets for mudguards and a drilled crown, but if there is any way to fix a rack without changing the fork, I'll take it.
    any ideas?

  • Steel fork perhaps? you already got a decent carbon fork from the sound of it, something like the Surly Straggler fork?

  • That is a nice fork, but then I'd like it to match the oversized tubing of the frame.

    Ah well, just gotta look for a way to fix a rack to a CX fork...

  • I'm sure there must be a rule of thumb I can't find it.

    If I want to run a wheel with a fixed road gear on one side and freewheel on the other side oriented more towards path/gravel/light ssCX on the other, approximately what is the maximum difference in sprocket size I can use without having to worry about swapping chains too.

    (Assuming conventional 'track end' drop outs)

  • There isn't a standard track dropout length.

    I've managed to get 8 teeth diff out of a pomp, with space to spare.

    Set brakes for SSCX, use MAD SKIDZ to stop when fixed = best of both worlds :-)

    Since I'm unlikely to need to swap mid-ride maybe easiest to have a spare chain handy at home.

  • 8 teeth not enough? Nb smaller chain rings will make 8 teeth loads.

    My old pomp was 32x12 fixed ( fairly close to 70 gi, normal off the peg fixed gi), which would give you at least 32x20... Which is surely spiny enough?

    If you combined it with a double up front you could make up for the drop on the back with a similar bigger chainring at the front, then the wheel hardly moves and brakes can work in both set ups...
    Ie 36x13 and 32 x17

    By the way in my experience not changing the chain is about a million times better than changing it!

  • Ok so our boiler (storage heater, electric, we have no gas) is only giving us warm water, not hot

    It was first noticed last monday, the day before we fully emptied the boiler for the first time that I can remember. The water is too cold to shower in unless you turn the shower on full heat (so its just pure water from the boiler) and even then its meh at best. We've been away this weekend so its had 3 full days of coming on with absolutely nothing coming out and its still just the same temperatures

    Any ideas or is it one for the landlord? theres no controls on it other than setting the current time on the thermostat, it comes on automatically between 1 and 7.

    Google suggests the elements have just got old but would that happen overnight?

  • Excellent thanks! We'll see if I get this Pomp... I almost bought one when they were £99 for the frame-set on Planet X but dithered and now they're up to £150 again.

    I've never tried SSCX but I can't imagine I'd need more than 50ish gi for the stuff I run on around here (which would be where I think I'd ride mostly). c. 70gi on the road is what I ride as well so it could be ideal.

  • Yep, elements can break. Not hard to change.

    Are there two elements in the tank? If there is economy 7, usually with storage heaters there is, there is a lower element and an upper element. Elements aren't hard to replace. Drain tank and use a immersion element spanner.

  • I have eco7 too and am now curious. I have noticed there are two elements, do they both come on over night? I was under the impression that one of them was the "emergency" can turn on at any time of day element, and the other was the regular workhorse element that does all the overnight heating.

    Also, is there is a thermostat in there? Wondering if there is any merit in turning it off if I am away for a weekend (assuming the insulation is working well).
