Hahaha, and don’t I know it, there’s going to be a few bits and pieces like that..
@6pt just at the corner of the kitchen there? It’s Dulux colours and the kitchen wall is “tranquil dawn” and the gable end wall meeting it is “letters unread”, which has somehow stuck in my head as “human remains”. Used human remains in the porch and a couple walls in the office and it looks different depending on what colour it’s sitting beside but in a complimentary fashion

@JurekB @ltc @TW thanks so much, I can’t believe how it’s all turning out really, and it’s still not feeling quite real, folk like me do labour for people with houses like this and then leave again, right?
Considering it’s my first time doing a significant chunk of these things it’s way less slapdash or “that’ll do” looking than I expected to be honest
@bigshape I think I like the pink ones even better than the blue, there’s a real warmth to them. I just got my way round the kitchen window last night and have got them all cut for going round those plugs now so that will be tonight’s job. Couldn’t quite fit all full tiles under the window and didn’t want one side or the other to have a sliver so started full tiles each side and worked my way to the middle so the not quite full size tiles should be hidden by the tap
@hippy haha yeah I’ll give you that one, cheers!
@Cazakstan @russmeyer thanks so much! Not going to be as finished as I’d hoped and we might be relying on the wood stove for heat and cooking and I may need to get a gym membership for showers for a bit, but in the grand scheme those are small things really

Yeah, putting in some shifts before then but it’s easier knowing the beginning of the end is in sight!
It’s taken a bit of ingenuity and some head scratching but it’s also saved us a fortune between those bits and the new big light fixtures (I saw a much more professional looking one with the staves for £700 a light!!).
@EejitCheers, I really like it and think the braided cables really help! We’d been trying to pick a colour for cable for months but feel the natural look has ended up nicer.
Couldn’t be happier with the big lights. The sparky attached a plug to one of the light wires so we could run some power to them as early morning and late night are too dark now to do some of the more fiddly work or just by job lights.

Bit of a photo dump again, been working flat out because move in date is next Wednesday. Days off are 12 or 13 hour days and as soon as I’m back from work I’m into work clothes and up painting away. Had a few successes recently and got the porch almost done (final coat on the wall late last night).
We got the kitchen lights up and have a plan for getting the others up this mlorning, I might raise it a foot or so but I’m really chuffed with it. Bathroom is almost done and got a limestone tile skirting under the sink. Think the plumber is doing more of the heat pump pipework in the loft today and we’ll be hanging lights and I’ll hopefully spend this afternoon or evening on the kitchen splashback, getting there..

Ah I wish, but that’s a great idea!! Unfortunately just a 12v screwfix work light sitting on the front wheel supports. Might look into making a wee bracket or mount for it as it does fit well.
Boats were cancelled yesterday so the plumber and the electrician weren’t able to get out. Gave me time to tick a bunch of things off without people in the way though. Got some grouting done in the bathroom and put up the top layer of cut tiles, got the grouting done on the kitchen splashback, gave the bench seat it’s first coat of lady Penelope (F.A.B I reckon!), got one of the big hanging apex lights together and gave everything a good tidy so the plumber can just crack on while I’m at work today.
Really enjoying the combo of colours and how everything is tying together!

Yeah we grabbed one of those extinguishers just in case. Doubt I’ll be running towards it if it ever did go on fire, but handy to have just in case.
These headed off to their new home today, just into the cupboard in the workshop, but nice to get them out the way for now.
We also got some tiling done in the bathroom and the first splashback in the kitchen. Really like these tiles as they’re not perfectly straight lines and variations of the colour as well so is pretty forgiving when tiling. Still some to cut for the top row, but the generator ran out of diesel for cutting the last lot..

That’s really kind of you, thank you! I really think we’re capturing the goal of it feeling like an old house rather than a new build, the stove really helps with that I think?
@JurekB it was a combo of building regulations not being as intense (and therefore cheaper to build) for non living areas and not wanting to have lithium batteries in the house. Them going on fire is super scary, the joiner is on the fire brigade here and said they create their own oxygen so feed themselves.
@stevo_com oh I know right, there’s something kind of magical walking around in that light isn’t there?
@ltc that is a massive compliment, thank you so much. Smug is definitely not what I’ve ever aimed for, been homeless before and spent lots of time certain I’d die in a rattle damp single glazed hovel before so feel intensely fortunate for this opportunity!
@andyp it is a fun wee couple hour cycle round here, plenty of space for setting up some tents for the night too
@jonny cheers bud! It does feel like such a huge step forward using the space almost like we will when it’s done rather than going up there purely to paint or tile or … it really was a lift that we both needed to maintain momentum right now.
Talking about that, we’ve got things measured out for starting on the bathroom tiling tomorrow. I had meant to do that today, but the weather was dry and in November you have to take advantage of that up here! We brought a couple other bits of furniture in, that desk was my gran’s work desk that she was allowed to keep when she retired. That cleared enough space in the container to put all the extra cladding that had been lying in the workshop into there, and that let me really give the workshop a tidy.

@beseku @TW Hahaha, I did feel a little grubby ordering them as that did cross my mind too.. I promise any leftovers will only ever support a hammock on the deck!!
@JurekB thanks! I felt I had to try and show it, I’ve walked in darker afternoons here compared to that night!
@Technics100 thanks, feel like I’ve said it’s beginning to feel like a home since about April but it is actually now!

Yeah it’s feeling pretty special, still lots to do but definitely lifted our spirits a little and helped me regain a little energy for the next few weeks of attacking the to do list
@BrickMan good eyes, yeah a little island off Orkney, got a current projects thread going for it too. I know exactly what you mean and really want to avoid getting into the “that’ll do for now” mindset. My partner had had a really rough week so the aim was just to give her a bit of a lift showing what we had to look forward to. Got three weeks to get all the finishings dealt with, a bit more tiling and probably another wee touch up coat of paint on each wall once sockets are all fixed, although I might try and do some painting this weekend before the rest of the sockets go on now the messy bit of cutting the holes is over.
@jambon I put a couple mist coats on our fresh plaster, and although it was a little patchy by the time the second coat of colour is on you don’t notice at all. A brush would be an arduous task, just cover as much as you can and go for it with a roller.

Hahaha how did you guess? She also sits pretty well next to all my carhartt dungarees too.
@velosaurus thank you! We’re really surprising ourselves with how well it’s coming together to be honest, everything we’ve bought has eithe looked too big or too small for the space, but then when it sits there it just fits nicely. Really chuffed with the combo of new and home made on the kitchen too and I think the floor tiles play a huge part too, think it would feel like a much different space with carpet or laminate.
Oh nice, what brought you up, it’s a nice part of the world there. Haha like you say though, the winter creeps up and autumn of mild and wet seems to last forever..@almac68 thanks for the support, guess if it was simple everyone would be doing it.. this last couple years has taught me patience but also a bit of resignation unfortunately.. still confident that things will happen, just not in the timescale or with the urgency I’ve hoped. She spent the next day under the duvet, think some of it was fear but most of it was being knackered after spending all night roaming around and exploring
@TW it’s a fisheye so a bit deceptive, but there’s way more floor space with the kitchen in than we pictured. I thought the back of the couch would be close and we’d be squeezing past it but there’s a big gap behind it.
@Sergeant_Pluck thank you so much, it’s been such a fight at points and the next few weeks are going to be working on things or packing up where we’re renting, really looking forward to the big breath out when we’re in. I know there will still be to do lists, especially in the workshop, but not with the same urgency.
Got these big bastards bolts for hanging the big lights. Chunkier than I’d though but won’t have to worry about the lights going anywhere. Here’s a photo of it with a 3 second shutter on the night of the full moon, it was so bright the other night

Been a while since the last post so this is a bit of a photo dump. The joiner cleared out last week to let the electrician and plumber in. Electrician has been out the last couple days and is back out next week and the plumbers are booked on the boat all next week too. Got started on cutting holes for sockets and light switches, fucking terrifying after spending so long trying to make walls perfect and painted.
Caught Scottish water out doing the track inspection a month later than planned and they were kind enough just to do the connection at the same time so have water from an outside tap and one in the workshop now. The one into the house is capped for now waiting for the plumbers.
We also got the cupboard and loft hatch installed in the workshop too. Oiled the big bit of driftwood that will form the light hanging over the island worktop.
When all the tools were out of the space it was back to feeling bigger than expected! To treat ourselves we took a bunch of stuff up on Saturday, cat proofed all the holes and spent the evening there. Felt really cosy with the stove going and nihil seemed confident enough to do some exploring but she didn’t like the stove (not sure if smells or unusual noises). Having slept on a couch the past few months I had the best sleep on our new mattress, punctuated by noises from nihil exploring but can’t wait to be in an actual bed consistently!

That’s really kind of you, thank you! Wouldn’t feel right you not getting anything out of it as that’s a lot of skill/work/time/clamping/glue.. happy to do a forum donation as well but would need to get you something.
Also, just noticed your middle of lidl quote, that’s one of the shops we do have up here and I’m in looking constantly, got a nice wee stove fan for £20 yesterday. Anyways, really nice work bud

@6pt Ahh, the cloakroom the walls are that letters unread and the pink is called lady Penelope and that’s in their diamond satinwood finish
