Nice, thanks for that. You made me a chainring light mount a couple of years ago (and some bars), will see if I can find a way to use the mount on this build.

I have something in the works I want a 46/30 but I just can't stomach the look of that 50.4 spider.
May I present the humble IRD Defiant. Only downsides are that they’re a bit pricey, and you can hardly find them anywhere (in Europe).

SJS have them, but for a very unhumble £300

Of course not.
But are the crank arms equidistant to the BB that way? Otherwise you could get knee aches and all that and donotwant.gif -

I also fancy the EA90s from an aesthetical perspective, but the chainring combos are very expensive and you get the same problem with the Middleburns that the axle is bonded to the crank arm and iirc they're quite short. So no good with a bsa30 setup.

I had a pair of Easton ea90s on a bsa30 no issues for 1000s Km etc.
Are they not designed for a bsa30, or Atleast Easton do a bsa30 to suit.

Can you not just use a triple crankset with the chainrings on the middle and inner rings? Maybe not the most aesthetically pleasing.
Will a standard shimano front mech be ok with such a big drop between chainring sizes? ie from 46 to 30?

I have a triple with 2x set up on middle and inner, 42t to 22t and it shifts absolutely fine (shimano rsx and Campag veloce 10spd shifter) actually smooth even despite the internet saying you shouldn't have more than a 16t gap between ratios etc etc

the "bintage" version is the fc-mc34. originally a triple but with the inner mounted to a custom middle ring - now a 94bcd double, e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/196176887594

Lets not forget that he already has these:)

I’ve returned to my senses and will use the Middleburns, as above. If the chainline is out of whack then I may replace the axle, per the below, as a last resort.

Useful Middleburn RS8 spindle removal info from an Insta-acquaintance with great taste in bikes.

Yup, the distance between the inside of both crank arms and the chainstay outers is ~19.7mm.

Decent option, but I think I prefer a more modern look. I'll try and avoid further derailing this thread, to be continued in my thread at some point.

where do you put the outer? in the place of the middle presumably with that number of teeth on the inside? about to do this on the tandem with triple deore fr mech x2 chinook chainrings, and LX integrated brake shift thingies, all 9spd, and thinking a 40t wide range cassette on the back

Up to a tenth of a mm. Dedication, and great success!

I said iirC..;)
I don't know, liked them, read some stuff that put me off of it, exact reason didn't stick.
But yes I'll also quit derailing this thread.. -

Just collected the wheels from Gary in Malmesbury: Deore M525 hubs (£45) and 26" Kinlin TL-23 rims (£56). £251 all in.

Less janky photos tomoz, when the stem arrives, but in the meantime… just looking like a wow. Sorry, niche South Asian pop culture reference there.

Lovely! I like the color of the hubs and silver spokes and nipples is always a win!

Very good
If you were using Shimano cranks then omitting one of the spacers might mean the pre load bolt bottomed out on the axle before actually pre loading the bearings but if the ‘Burns have enough adjustment to take up the extra space then go for it.
