I really like them.
I bought these used off the forum so can’t say how many times they have been washed and how that has been done. Obviously that can effect the waterproofing.
I find that the outer surface gets wet in heavy rain but inside there is absolutely zero moisture passing through. In lighter rain it just beads off.
While they look really damp, if you just brushed your hand over it a lot of that dark ‘dampness’ just vanishes.
They don’t really get heavy or sodden with water. The fabric just gets a little darker and that’s it.
The fit is good for me, a little loose in the waist but I’m particularly slim so very few other people will have that issue with the XS size. This can probably be modified by Albion if I asked.
They make for great waterproofs for fast road riding, unlike a lot of other brands, but still manage not to be restrictive or skin tight.
All in, I think they are great. I would be happy to pay the retail price, if I had the money. -

I’m going to have to (partially) rebuild it anyway as some parts are not in great condition. The Spyres are super crunchy and feel terrible in comparison to R8000 hydros on the Canyon.
If I’m going to replace the shifters I might as well go for flat bar as the components are substantially cheaper.
This is how I’m justifying it in my own mind… -

all cable discs are shit and esp with cable bends on that frame
-
• #155
Only took me a few thousand km to realise 😅
Cheap Shimano pre-bled hydros seem like an easy solution, if I can get some in flat mount. -
• #156
They're not cheaper once you have ruined the bike and never use it so end up buying the drop shifters anyway.
Don't flat bar it, it's spot on as it is now, just go hydro -
• #157
You are all right, of course.
But those Sram shifters are so expensive, even used. I’ll figure something out. -
• #158
Ah I assumed it was hydro already. Switching to drop bar hydros is a bit of an expense Vs flat bar so I can see where you're coming from.
I would just cheap out, maybe get 10sp tiagra hydros. My 10sp GRX is really nice.

I said I wasn't going to spend much money rebuilding the Carbonda, but I bought a pair of Nitto B125SSB in 39cm. For proper neo-retro-postmodern-rando vibes.
Nitto measure at c-c of the drops so the hood position should be at about 36cm which is perfect.
This should solve an issue I've been having. The drops on the compact bars I've been using are touching the Witslingers bag I have up front which is pretty uncomfortable and causes problems when I'm trying to carry lots of stuff. The bike really needs to be completely pulled apart.
I've been commuting and doing all my road riding on it over the past year without much maintenance and it's not in the best shape.I'll need to replace:
Shifters -> Sram Hydro? Trp Hydro + Bar End shifter?
Brakes
Tyres
Bent rack strutAnd:
Service wheels
Redo tubeless
Fix creak at cable entry port (bane of my existence)I'm not in any rush but I don't have the time to do it in bits as I need to be on it commuting most days.

The reach on those is really long, but lovely bars otherwise.
-
• #161
Yeah that was my worry about them, but the reach I have set right now is pretty conservative so shouldn't be a problem (hopefully). Should be slightly shorter and slightly higher than my road position.

Can you not just go Shimano for the brakes? There are some good deals floating around on grx and 105 at the moment.
-
• #163
Would have to change the rear derailleur too then.
Might end up being the same amount as just buying the SRAM hydro shifters. That being said, I do prefer Shimano so maybe that's a better option.I'm also considering cable pull hydro calipers such as Juin Tech.

What's your budget?
-
• #165
I don't really want to spend anymore than like, £150 redoing the braking. Even that hurts a bit!
I'm over the Spyres so maybe cable actuated hydaulic will give a little more bite without having the replace the shifters. That way I can just put some new rubber hoods on the shifters, recable everything and it should be good to go for this year.
Most of the time it's a commuter, some wet weather training and then touring (assuming no more bad luck) now that I have the Canyon, so maybe this will be a nice middle ground comprimise with spending lots of money and performance? -
• #166
Hmm. I've used both spyres and Juintech a lot and tbh I didn't really notice much difference between them. I persisted for a few years to try and reuse my SRAM red groupset without spending a lot but eventually I bought a hydro Di2 group at Dickpreciation price and I'd never consider cable discs again. I have force 22 HRD on the gravel bike though and it is great. 0 maintenance in three years and running perfect.

Seems like I'm either going to have to get very lucky finding cheap parts or think of something very smart!

I was always a bit disappointed with Spyres but definitely noticed an improvement after switching to (Jagwire) compressionless housing. Also totally personal but I found setting them up with a bit more lever travel felt much better. I also tried cable actuated hydraulic (hy/rd) and didn’t find them that much of an improvement, but again probably a bit subjective this stuff.
Canyon looks great btw!

Fwiw I have hy/rd on my Rove, and Mrs. Dadbike has a Rove from two years prior with Spyres. Same TRP rotors, pads, etc. Her spyres feel better than my hy/rd. I'm tempted to install spyres on mine.
All that said, when I was a full-time mechanic in a former life we carried a few lines of bikes that specced spyres on some models. Spyres feel very squishy with cheap housing. Good housing is kinda the key with those. IMO/ATMO/whatever

I already have it set up with compressionless but, as Amey said on the previous page, I think it's just the nature of cable discs internally routed. Might try with some braided compressionless or something like that.
