Not much progress, but I took a non-cyclist friend for a spin to the woods. She listened to me talk about the bikes a bit, then tried the pink one. She loved how it rode, and called me a nerd.

I loved the grey fixed guy. Still need to sort out rack and decaleur, but I like the 70 inch ratio and fixed on big tyres was just as fun as I thought it would be.
Might try wider bars, I kinda feel like narrower puts more strain on upper back.

I like that pink bike, although I needed quite a long amount of time to figure out why a brake lever is sticking out of the saddle ...
Who made the Bag? Looks like Ostrich? -

Recognised moodboard Pipe dude he did the 76 Trans America that had lots of adapted steel bikes.

That's a lovely gallery, thanks for that. I imagined this dude as a perpetual bike tramp, but his story is even better.

Yeah, both bags are ostrich. Planetx used to sell two models for like £40, I got one of the last of the green ones.
I've been waiting forever for a stem that should fit the pink guy, then it should be much more rideable for me. -

Quick photo to show that there's been progress, needs some more work tho. Wider bars, better light mount solution, etc etc

What’s the chainset you’ve got here. Looks lovely

It's a spa triple that they had on a sale, set up as double. I actually don't fancy it aesthetically. It's also 160mm which was very appreciated on a 700->650b conversion, could be argued to be unnecessary here.

I like the bars, however I want them higher, which is gonna look weird but might work well with my messed up back. Swapping stems/bars is a huge ballache but I'll do it for the nitto bling.
The decaleur sits very low which is a problem for the taller bag. Not sure how to solve that.
I def want to go back to a 42 front ring, I'm too soft for 46.
Back on the sexy spd sandals so need to update the moodboard.

I forgot the name of this hill but I remember how the last time I was here, there was a cool lady who ran a used book store and knew this Syd guy to whom the cairn is dedicated to.
Apparently, he was a Dundeean who lost his sight in an industrial accident (iirc). As a man of the hills, he wanted someone to guide him through the Caringorms, so he sent an ad in the paper for a walking buddy. The guy in charge of the ad section offered to take him himself. At some point during the night, it was revealed that Syd also had an undisclosed wooden leg.

The grey fixed slaps, so fun to ride. Still need a free day-two in a workshop to sort it out fully tho.

New project: Thorn Club Tour MK4. Not much on this online, but it was a good enough deal for an impulse purchase. According to the old 2018 catalogue, this'll fit 35-40 700 tyres, which is nice, but I obviously want to 650b it. A 70mm BB drop is a tad much, but the MK5 models have the same drop and are offered in 2.1 650b. Chainstays on MK5 are meant to be wider, but it sounds like I'll have some room. There's almost a finger of clearance on each side with 42s.
I like Thorn because they're a bit weird and have that holier-than-thou culty framebuilder thing going on. They're definitely doing their own thing. Insistence on rim brakes, infodumping in the catalogues, weird aesthetic sense... They're like Crust's autistic british cousin. Which is kinda cool. I get to build an autistic rando bike.

Still undecided on the cockpit, which I guess will determine the bike's identity?
So far I know that it'll have:
Alfine dynamo + edelux for that bling
Nitto M18 (if I find one)
WTB Horizon 650b 48 tyres and I'll be brave enough to finally try tubeless
Ryde Trace rims because that's the cheapest nice looking disc rim on SJS
Old stronglight sub compact
Boring big black BluemelsSomeone sell me some VO mudguards pls
Some aliexpress calipers orAvid bb7s because they'recheapermore old school than TRPs
DT shifters - I'm so happy I get to have dt shifters with a modern disc frame, it's so wild and dorky.
44cm compact drops
TRP single levers? That's what I have rn -

Took it to the workshop so I can work on it in small doses in after office hours, like Johnny Cash. Forgot to take a bb. I think I have to subdue my usual impulse to go silver on the details, I think black will make more sense here.

Campy 10sp shifters miiight work with 9sp shimano? We know that 8sp does, but the cable pull of 9sp is like .3mm off. From another bike, I know that 11sp and 8 sp shimano work well together, and the cable pull is only off by .1 mm. Maybe .3 mm of difference between 10campy and 9 shimano will be fine too? Has anyone tried this?
