• Is it just different chainrings that make the 0x601 work for 10 speed and 901 work for 11 speed? Or is it more complicated?

I read somewhere that the internal width of 10 and 11 speed chains was the same but really I have no idea.

@andy_k are you running 11 speed with your Zephyrs?

Ideal world would be 11 speed compatible, 110bcd zephyr outer, 74bcd inner, sub 150mm Q factor, and fully non proprietary. That way I could run 11 speed with DT shifters and use these wheels as spares for my road bike (which has 11 speed Sram).

  • And I've completely forgotten to screw a bike onto them.

    Haaha

My pal’s got to work on that frame, used an angle grinder to get the crank off in the end after destroying some tools. The seatpin is soaking in plusgas.

Love a ‘subcompact’! Built one out of a TA provis for towpath touring with kiddy trailer a while back, it was great!

  • Different chainrings I think.
    Also 10/11 shouldn't matter, you're right.

  • Serious business!
I hope it all works out : )

All this subcompact stuff is new to me, seems weird there's not more budget options. I used to have one of those TA chainsets... really should have kept it.

  • Sounds good...
I'll place a wanted ad for an ox601 / 901 and watch the tumbleweed float by.

This might be one of those things that gets left for when I move out of London and this becomes more of a 'nice' bike.

  • I'm running 1x6 at the moment. Can't be much help but can't see why 11 wouldn't work, the only thing to stress is you have to use a TA middle ring in the outer position, not your normal outer ring, because of the way the chainring bolts are recessed. I will get a photo when I next clean this bike if needed.

  • Good to know, thanks again.

  • Progress! Matthew from Saffron was amazingly generous with his time and came up with this:

I've been running an ox601 46x30 crankset in an 11-speed set up for over 4 years now without issues. Good crankset if you can find one, very good shifting and solid enough. If buying second hand try not to get the early recalled model and do tighten them up to correct torque - they had incorrect torque specs early on and did come loose.

  • Thanks for the heads-up... sounds dodgy!

I've actually been erring towards the GRX stuff recently as it is significantly cheaper. Even if it doesn't take Zephyr chainrings, maybe Shimano will be kind enough to keep making their 4-bolt ones for the foreseeable.

  • Some more pictures: These are the lugs... the seat clamp thing will be changed to fit more modern allen key bolts.

  • And here's the parts pile so far:

  • Still need a stem... just waiting to sort out a couple of final bike-fit things before I know what length, but probably 100mm / quill / 26.0 / black. Hit me up if you have anything scruffy but decent.

And a seatpost, but again I think I need to hold back until I know for sure about offset.

Pretty sure everything else is coming from the tourer... unless I find an amazingly cheap and scruffy compact double in the next few weeks.

Wheels are being built, should have them next week : )

  • Hit me up if you have anything scruffy but decent.

Scruffy yes, decent that's up to you... I've got these, the ITM is 90mm and the Deda is 100mm. Had these for so long you're welcome to have any for free.

Re your crankset, is 110mm considered compact? I've got this BNIB Apex one, not sure which chainring belongs to it to be honest, it comes with a BB, and crank length is 165mm which may be a deal breaker. I got it for a decent price few years back for a sweet fixie project that never happenned...

Keep in mind you need the GRX front derailleur in this case, because of the 2.5mm wider Q-factor to make more room for bigger tyres.

  • Cheers Loic! Might be interested in the Deda - let me wait and see if it's the right length : )

Crankset: 110 isn't quite small enough on the inner ring, I'm after more of a 46 / 30 combo. But yeah, 165mm would've been a deal-breaker anyway... Thanks so much though. Whatever happened to the sweet fixie, eh?!

  • Keep in mind you need the GRX front derailleur in this case, because of the 2.5mm wider Q-factor to make more room for bigger tyres.

GRX double and R8000 front mech here, because was all I had. Works fine.

  • Cheers @Tijs, didn't know that. Other than the FD, do you know if the GRX chainset work with 11 speed 105? 5800 stuff can be picked up pretty cheap on ebay / facebook atm so it's quite tempting.

  • Guessing it's a question of getting it low enough on the frame to accept the smaller ring?

  • Other than the FD, do you know if the GRX chainset work with 11 speed 105?

GRX 11 speed works just fine with other Shimano road 11 speed. For example you can use 105 shifters with GRX derailleurs. You just need to pair the GRX chainset with the GRX front derailleur.

But apparently @velosaurus 's experience is an Ultegra derailleur works just fine, so maybe it's bullshit.

  • Yes. On my Camino Ti the bottle boss was in the way so had to use a braze on mech and slotted clamp (using 6800 rear mech and RS685 shifters). Obvs if didnt already have FD8000 mech would have bought a GRX front.

  • Probably doesnt shift as well as the GRX but seems to work fine for me.But then Shimano front mechs are very forgiving to different setups. I think I also tried a FD785 as well and that worked.

  • But then Shimano front mechs are very forgiving to different setups.

    Right, @hippy?

  • I was thinking about getting a clamp-on adaptor for this bike anyway (original plan was have a braze-on).

That way I can run it as low as 46 /30 and switch to 53 /39 without any height issues... or even run 1x without an unsightly / unused hanger.
