  • Very nice! Really dig the colors and all the silver bits.

  • Still my favourite bike.

  • Built a true "parts bin" road bike with a frame that was hanging around work.

Frame is a 1990s lee cooper, build for LA CYCLES way back when. Bb is stamped 1990.

    Size : 60 ST 58 TT. Reynolds 531.

Nothing matches apart from the wheels and tyres - 105 hubs on open pros.

It has such beautiful forks but they will only fit 32 without guards and 28 with guards. The rear however has plenty of space for 32 with guards, maybe more if the tyre / rim combo is right.

Campag 10 speed shifters with 9 speed ultegra on 8 speed cassette, Ronnie style.

Plenty of bdhu and mafac centre pull brakes.

    42 / 24 chainrings - 11 / 28 cassette.

    True "French fit"

    And weighs less than 10kg.

    Guards incoming.

  • This needs a Nitto rack. Your best build yet? Off to a very good start at least

  • Wow high praise, thank you!

Definitely one of my faves so far... I've got some hammered alu guards in silver I want to fit but need to buy some hardware for them etc.

    Or black guards?

  • Use what you have. Unless hardware is more expensive than new ones

  • That’s awesome. Silver guards please, have some respect.

  • It has such beautiful forks but they will only fit 32 without guards and 28 with guards

    sooooo...you're putting the 32s on right.....right!?!?

    Guards incoming.

    RIGHT?!?!!?

  • 28s here as It needs guards

If I like this bike enough, I may convert the frame to 650b and get a crust lightning bolt fork shipped over 😅

I just want to be as cool as @Tijs

  • Surely it would be cheaper to have braze-ons for cantis brazed on?

  • There is not enough room.

    It's basically road fork clearance

  • embrace the 28

  • I just want to be as cool as @Tijs

You’re way cooler. Also, don’t get a low trail fork.

  • Custom fork for the Crust when?

  • I’ve asked @Jaap, but he’s busy. :(

  • Why so?.

I also thought the forks currently on the LC were pretty low trail tbf...

  • I don’t like low trail. It’s supposed to be good with a front load, but 99% of the time I don’t ride with one, and without it the wheel wonders too much for my liking. I prefer a more stable ride.

LB forks are low trail yes, that’s why I wouldn’t get one. The crown of the newer models is nice though, but you can’t get those separately unfortunately.

  • Those forks are damn nice though...The LC has a very lively front end, bloody moves a lot so could be low trail already from what you're saying...

@Hulsroy, How would one measure trail on forks? Just so I know where I am starting etc

DW, found this which explains it well HERE.)

  • This is my go to site http://yojimg.net/bike/web_tools/trailcalc.php

Maybe I should do a YT video on how to measure geometry

  • Rode the bike home from work today, the ride is now 23 miles not 23 minutes so I had a good chance to get to know the bike a little.

First problem was my saddle was set slightly too high and I had no tools.

Second is I feel the front is "sketchy" in ways, rather twitchy and when going round corners it doesn't feel attached to the bike if that makes sense. I don't know if it's because of the fork trail, the fact it should have weight or the fact you've got in my head!

Thought apart from this I enjoyed riding home now the weather is not as cold. I bought my first ordnance survey map of my area to find the nice none main road routes.

Something nice about looking at road / routes not on a screen

  • Please ignore the front guard ha. Didn't want to chance the commute... The first sks guard bloody snapped during the house move.

Still deciding if I like this or not

  • It sounds a lot like the feeling I had with my low trail Pelago, when I took the rack of.
I'd recommend you try a heavier rack to (like the Pelago Commuter or maybe the Rasket).
That would provide a stabilizing weight while not relying on the load on the rack to settle the steering feel.
It might be worth a punt before you source a new fork - you can always sell the rack if it doesn't work out.

  • This rack/basket combo has already provided some stability, though I still dont know if I like the handling...

Though this bike is temp until I get my 2012 CDF repaired and running, which you know, could be a long time...

  • Picked this up yesterday for a song, full build with 7 speed shimano alvio in very good condition which will get cleaned up and stored for future commuter builds

Stripped it down today to give it a good clean and it turns out the frame has been well kept and came up lovely. Super nice not sanded fillets which look fantastic imo.

Size is 54 seat tube and 56. 5 top tube and weighs 3.6kg frame/forks/headset which I don't think is bad.

It also has room for 45c or more, both front and rear! Which is more than the Lee cooper by a country mile. So the idea is to build it up with a positive rise velo orange / nitto style drop bar stem and wheels / groupset from the Lee cooper.

The clearance and the fit are the things that let the Lee cooper down, that and I'm not sold on the handling.

Going for that brexit Rivendell vibe.
