You can't fix stupid apparently, can't wait for the AZ jab to become the new MMR/Autism with regards to efficiency in over65s.
You can't vaccinate it either, so it seems.
-
• #20653
That's fairly common for many vaccines. The flu vaccine for example has a post-jab observation period.
Yeah, I though that was normal.

I saw them at donnington in '83.

So the concerns with the SA variant are:
a) like the UK variant, it is more transmissible - perhaps 50% more than vanilla covid (but maybe still less than the UK variant?)
b) one of the mutations could make vaccines/existing antibodies less effectiveGiven we already have a more transmissible variant in widespread circulation, problem a) seems moot.
Problem b) is the worrying part.
Seems sensible to try and contain it, but as usual, looks like we are about a month late.

I think existing vaccines are ineffective against it, hence the concern.

Reduced effectiveness is not the same as ineffective.

Fair, less effective would’ve been better.

Deserted, my arse. You should see it on a sunny Saturday, even in January.

Well, that was kind of the joke relating to your video. :)

Yes, sciencey bloke on R4 just now was saying the same. The vaccine may need a tweak like it does for other variants which can take up to four weeks to develop but that’s not a huge deal.
-
• #20662
Ah. I’d forgotten that!
-
• #20663
So, we can amend the vaccine to stop the SA variant, but it takes time so we must must shut it down as much as possible. Hopefully it works.

I've been hearing those adverts asking for men who, have recently had CV19, to donate blood plasma.
I'm interested in why it is only men being asked to donate?

This is probably more accurate

Surely it is a huge deal if the vulnerable we've just spent the last month vaxing once again become at risk. It's almost back to the beginning.

Surely everyone who has been done so far will need re-doing, and as priority groups were done first those down the chain will have their vaccines delayed further?
Edit: what villa-ru said, I should read whole thread properly before replying.

I'd have thought that both have a wait time for a reaction, but never let truth get in the way of utter bullshit.

Caucasian men. Oh and it counts as an essential journey.
Anyone else doing it?
-

Why? There's less than 1/2million who have had two doses, from https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/vaccinations
It looks like they are 2nd dosing 2-5000 a day. Changing the second dose to be more effective takes 4 weeks, so thats another 140, 000 2nd dosed.
There is no evidence that existing vaccines are INEFFECTIVE against the new variants. (The last time I looked). The SARS-CoV-2 vaccine produced by the US biotechnology company Novavax is 95.6% effective against the original variant of SARS-CoV-2 but also provides protection against the newer variants B.1.1.7 (85.6%) and B.1.351 (60%), preliminary data from clinical trials show.
To put that in perspective, the flu jab varies between 40% to 60% effectiveness depending on the variant.

yeah it would be super useful for everyone if the speculative "WE ALL GON' DIE!" doomposting sans any meaningful citations could be wound in. this thread is rough enough as it is without all this noise.
if you insist on saying such things, at least have the good grace to include a link to a reputable news source.

Now the new variant is found in Bristol and Liverpool.
But hey! Border’s open y’all.
-
• #20675
y r our borders open.
New Zealand: Borders closed. New cases yesterday: 3. Total Deaths: 25. Jacinda Ardern has committed to keep them closed until every resident is vaccinated.
True but I guess you rather not be part of the "big event" right now :)
