  • Thanks for your input! You can fuck off now.

  • so if I donated to Mind or elsewhere they'd give Scott the money required for the equipment and space he needs to build up a business?

It's up to us as individuals to decide what we're happy supporting and on what terms. People who support BRP and want to give with no strings attached can do so and people who just want to buy goods can do so and people who don't want to give, buy or other don't have to, but neither do they have to piss all over him for putting it out there on the dubious premise that there's charities needing funded that won't be otherwise? Really unnecessary imhop; if you won't apologise then at least desist/take it elsewhere.

  • Do hurry up and fuck off. Maybe from the whole forum. Ta.

  • this^

44 comments since 2011 and 9 of them on BRPs thread.

Have you had a failed business recently that no one donated to?

  • I referred to charities because he used gofundme to solicit donations, which is a platform I associate with deserving causes. Maybe the whole thing would have been clearer if he'd have given his bank details and asked for cash. Again am not criticising people for giving, just him for asking without any thought of reimbursing people. I am yet to see anyone post that they would ask their mates for 6k without any plan to pay it back, would anyone do this?

TvH - So because I voice an opinion you disagree with I have to immediately leave the forum? Maybe you could articulate why I am so wrong?

  • I say we all just leave it there chaps.

  • The nice thing about the friendliest forum on the Internet is I don't need to articulate why you're wrong, I can just call you a massive cunt.

  • No failed business. Honestly I am lurker, look at tire recommendations etc. The only reason I am engaging in this thread is because people seem determined to shutdown and belittle a legitimate opinion without discussion. I wasn't planning a prolonged impersonation of Martin Lewis.

  • Those balls must be weighing heavy on your spacerbar.

  • If I wanted to do something that was really really important to me, and the only way I could think of to do it was to ask my friends to give me money, and I finally got the courage to ask them, would I do so with a plan for repayment? Perhaps a personal one, but not one I'd make public or use for making any kind of promise. And actually, I don't think it makes sense that it would ever be repaid in kind (money). This is not an "investment" - that seems to be something you can't fully accept.

Have you not seen the gofundme requests that are for holidays and the like? Are you confusing it with justgiving?

  • personally I agree with the view that a kickstarter campaign would be the right way to go from the outset, but that conversation has been had, and no one called anyone unethical or "asking for free money".. it's just your approach I guess.

  • this all hinges on your impression of gofundme being only for charity donations. it's not. Indeed, few of the people using it are registered charities.

BRP has been a constant presence on here since the early days, most know the products if not the person, and because it's a community, that has currency in its own right. It's not like he's a random.

It's fucking lame if you refuse to recognise that by insisting on having this discussion in this thread you've not taken a shit on it, and again, fucking poor form. if you want to have a discussion on this topic there's any number of other threads for you to have it in.

  • No point raging against this, there's forum history at play. I get the wider point about these platforms and how they can disrupt what have traditionally been seen as more worthy beneficiaries - the case in point being that cunt on a bike who fitted an air horn and thought it gave him the right to scatter pedestrians until one he decked at a junction sued him and won. Find that guy, take a good shit on him, not BRP please.

But yeah, probably better discussed in the 'I Hate' thread.

  • I’ve not been on here for yonks, but used to be a pretty active forum member (with the user name Polybikeuser, which I don’t seem to be able to resurrect at the mo). Maybe others have similar history with the forum, maybe not, but those that do will appreciate both the huge contribution that Scott has made to this forum and this community and the sheer craftsmanship of his bag making, it’s pure art. For many this and of itself is 110% worth supporting, he’s also in my experience a great bloke, who puts far more into the world than he takes or asks for.

You’re of course absolutely entitled to your own opinions and worldview, but you may well be wading into something you neither appreciate the history or full story of and in Scott’s thread, if you know anything about this forum, unless things have changed beyond all recognition, you shouldn’t be too surprised if you get some more than robust push back.

  • I'm sorry you felt so uncomfortable reading this thread, and despite the fact that I've already explained myself several times throughout the course of it, I'll try again.

You asked if I made any 'effort' to secure funding through 'conventional means'.
As you have failed to specify, I will assume that you mean either good old fashioned 'hard work', or some kind of 'loan/credit' ?
Since moving back to London, I have been working 5 days a week, every single week, with almost no days off, either for holidays or sick days (neither of which I get paid for), for over 4 years straight. The reason for this is to try and fund my passion (private enterprise).
If you were to check my own threads on here, you will see that almost all of them are 'for sale' threads. I've sold or am attempting to sell my bikes, bike parts, music equipment, sewing machines, BRP merchandise...basically anything I can to try and keep money rolling in and allow me to keep moving forward with BRP.
I am paying every month for the biggest place I could (just) afford to rent to allow me to fit a modest sized workshop in it, to avoid having to rent two separate places.
I am paying the day to day expenses we all have.
I am paying towards my children's upbringing every month, I'm paying thousands per year for my eldest sons university accommodation.
I am still paying for the huge debt a former flatmate generated on my old credit card nearly a decade ago by not paying her rent, and me being stupid enough to cover it for her.
Now on top of that I'm trying my hardest to save money wherever possible to cover the cost of new equipment, the cost of CAD design work, custom machining, tools, materials...basically everything necessary to allow me to carry on designing and prototyping the new bags that will allow me to offer something more than the majority of 'me too' products that flood the market daily.
Every pair of socks I own have holes in...it's become a running joke in my flat, but it's true. My work shoes are worn down and worn out. I'm rotating 2 pairs of trousers...because I'm too worried that If I buy a new pair of any of those things, it will take me that much longer to get the next piece of machining done.
I barely eat out, and barely treat myself or those I love, because all my 'effort' is going towards funding BRP.
If you were talking about loans or credit...I am in the absolute lowest credit band. I don't qualify for bank loans, business loans, credit cards, or overdrafts...I've been on the same mobile provider since my first ever phone, because I can't even get a new phone contract.
If this whole 'sob story' is making you feel uncomfortable too, I apologise again...because I'm not trying to write a sob story...it's just the facts. The only means I have to secure funding is through my own hard work, selling my belongings, and relying on the generosity of the kind few who still believe in me.

I've said this several times already...I didn't dream 'Gofundme' up myself to 'solicit' money and 'exploit people's goodwill'...I used the platform, as thousands already have, as a way to try and help me to start BRP again, alongside the work I am already putting in myself daily to do so.
I have also explained several times why I couldn't use Kickstarter 'at this stage'...
Because without a workshop in the first place, and without my sewing machines, materials, custom hardware, and everything else required...I can't work on the prototypes and pre-production versions of the bags and products needed to even be able consider running a kickstarter campaign.

Despite all my fuck ups along the way...and there have been many...I have always tried my hardest to help other people where possible. I have given prizes, supported fundraisers and races, DJ'd at courier parties...all usually at cost to myself...even when I was at my lowest financially and mentally.
The last year has been unbelievably hard, both financially and mentally too.
I would love nothing more than to be able to fund BRP entirely on my own again...or be able to just walk into a bank and walk out with a nice big business loan and credit line...but not all of us have that luxury, because some of us have fucked up too many times in our life.

This is me trying my best to make a success of myself and my business, through both 'conventional' and by the looks of it 'non conventional' means...and if I do, I will be doing everything I can to repay the generosity that many people have shown me.

As I have also said many times...nobody is under any obligation to donate anything.
So if you have a problem with the 'asking', don't listen.
If you feel 'uncomfortable' reading, close the thread and read one you do feel comfortable with.
If BRP doesn't qualify as a 'worthy cause' to you, donate to one that does.

To everyone else...Thank you for allowing me to solicit free money from you by exploiting your goodwill for my own financial gain! xxx

  • .

  • Oh just give it a fucking rest already you tiresome bore.
Off to donate to Scott again.

  • nice post - thank you.

it's payday on friday and I'll ping you over something then.

  • LOL...he fell for it again

  • Haha now pedrito has deleted his post it looks like I’m calling Scott a tiresome bore for his heartfelt opus :D

  • You could have focused on a simple single product for kickstarter and churned them out until you met your obligations,no? I honestly still believe it's unethical to take advantage of your standing here and ask for free money, especially as you don't appear to have exhausted all other options. A government small business grant will match any investment you make and you don't need a decent credit history to apply. A job centre will help you with this, they will also provide advice invaluable advice on successfully running a small business. Try citizens advice for other organisations that'll help with funding and essential business skills. You also seem resistant to producing any kind of business plan, which is alarming as it's suggest you're not sufficiently organised. You'd benefit more from getting sound business advice from any accountants or professional on here, rather than money. Have you asked anywhere for this help? Seems like you just want the money, whilst being unwilling to do the boring administration first.

  • I might be the only cunt telling you this, but by the looks of your gofundme total other are thinking it.

  • At least you've got one thing right this evening.
