  • Thanks @zooeyzooey I'll give that a go tonight.

  • @zooeyzooey you absolute legend. Those little flecks of silver have made such a difference.

  • Ah I'm glad you're happy with it! looks great.

  • What about serious historical waragaming, aka military simulations? The kind which tells us what would have happened if.... E.g. what would have happened if Germany had invaded the UK in 1940. That was fascinating. (The Germans got as far as where I used to live.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Sea_Lion_(wargame) Can anyone recommend others to read about? I'm curious about what might have happened if Bomber Harris hadn't targeted German civilians.

  • This isn't the thread for that. Same word, different meanings.

  • Might be some peeps on here into it. You never know. All sorts on here.

I do love Memoir ‘44, have you played that?

There's a small overlap. Civilians can have a go at Kriegsspiel, a military simulation issued to Prussian regiments in 1811. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kriegsspiel

I don't really want to play, I'm more interested in the alternative history which can emerge when the military play. The Op. Sealion game was played in 1974. The umpires included British and German generals who'd fought in the war.

  • why you so interested in nazi larping imo, sus

Midwinter minis had a nice video about this, “the issue with these sorts of war games is someone has to play as the nazis, and anyone who wants to do that isn’t really fun”

  • The Nazis lost decisively in the Sea Lion game, which is the way I like it.

My interest in the bombing of German cities in WW2 stems from Harris being accused of war crimes. It's very germane to the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. I'd like to know whether the war would have lengthened/worsened without Harris' campaign, perhaps with more of Russia being occupied by the Nazis and more of their ethnic cleansing of Slavs, or even the Allies being pushed back to the Channel in 1944.

  • Right, this is a thread about painting models, usually anyone who wants to interact with historical model painting is not really the sort of bloke you want to hang about with, even inquisitively (if my local model shop is anything to go by)

It sounds like you want a hearts of iron discord (although they’re not fun guys either)

  • I would definitely start your own thread for this subject. Here really isn't the place for it

More funny spacemen and aliens painting please

  • I have only the haziest memory of my history degree, but I don’t recall any skaven or tyrannids featuring in WWII

  • this is a thread about painting models

    I feel seen

  • They were there, watch world at war and you’ll see the the tau even helped back then.

  • Well now I feel slightly sheepish being happy with my attempt at Duncan Rhodes' battle damage techniques...

  • looks good with the highlight colour on them as well. If I had any criticism it would be that they're a bit large, this is an 8 foot tall dude in massive armour so the scale can be a bit off.

  • That's fair, and they were smaller to start with, but worried about the details not coming through.

Doing a squad of 5, and trying to improve on each one. Will aim for smaller on the next one, see what it looks like.

  • Not saying it looks bad and it'll certainly pass the 3 foot test.

  • Nah it's all good. I'm definitely in this more for the painting than the gaming and want to keep improving, so any and all feedback welcome.

  • There’s apparently a great WW2/Lovecraft RPG called “Achtung! Cthulhu” which might be my favourite name for a game ever.

  • Get yourself some contrast paints and get them done in an evening.

Though one of the reasons I love Blood Bowl so much is you only need to paint 11 figures to get going. Also it’s such a good game.

  • Catches eyes with others in this group and walks on while offering up this 'lil guy
