Veloviewer Tile Bagging?

  • Very wise. I think I had spotted the pattern after the first one and skipped some others.

I also missed out some of the climbing on the first day by doing a bit more main road. And I did the fast A road route into Seaton (the A35 descent is fun - busy A road, but fast downhill, but right turn to exit). But I got caught by the massive hill detour on the way into Truro...

  • But think of the tiles! :D

Tiles down there are dead to me how am I going to make a square out of them?

  • Good point. I think Porton Down (sp?) ruins the UK down there anyway but think of your yard or whatever it's called.

  • This has reminded me that I don't even have most of the tiles. I only have Bude-Looe as my garmin obviously had an off day.
    I'm not doing it again!

  • The sea ruins the UK down there, it's the thin end of the wedge!

You can't fit a big square into a small triangle

  • Yeah, but from where we are, we're never expanding past Porton anyway (unless I join the army and work in chemical weapon disposal...hmm)

  • Once you get your square up to the limits (mostly military stuff out that way) then it all becomes about the yard(inho). At least that's I'm telling myself when I can't be arsed to square bash any more.

I don't even have the big tile that has Regent's Park in. (I should do but I can't find the GPX file from The Muswell Hills 100 I did back in 2007).

  • I went from 32x32 to 35x35 today, but I worked damn hard for it. There were 3 or 4 tiles around Caterham that I just never seemed to go near and now I know why. My tile rides have just about always greatly exceeded my expectations, but this one was the extreme opposite. Just the most horrible area I have been to ever. Fast, hilly A roads with really heavy traffic including high proportion made up by HGVs. Rode on the pavement as much as possible. One area I'll never go back to.

  • Signed up to squadrats the other day, went for my first “must make pitiful ubersquadrat bigger” ride this morning. Found some very nice lanes and hills that I don’t think I would have ever bothered with if not for having this as a prompt. Was a bit sceptical of this whole thing, but definitely a convert now.

  • Since I can't ride my beloved Thames path anymore I thought I try this tile nonsense, first ride through the suburban hellscape of Eltham, hope the next ride is better.

  • Caterham

I've got a hole round Caterham. Doesn't make me too keen to plug it!

  • Caterham-on-the-Hill, Caterham, CR3, Purley and Coulsdon way?

  • These are the roads to avoid

  • The downsides of tile bagging...

"Oh, THAT'S why I never rode near here!"

  • It also looks like he might've fixed Chrome extension after RWGPS changes (thanks to Google Maps Streetview shitness)

  • Filling in lots of holes in my yardinho, annoyingly missed a tile by a few meters when turning L@T but it's easy to pick off when I go collecting tiles further out that way.

Slow progress these rides given all of the frequent instructions, shitty paths, detours through parks, skoggy lanes, etc. I'm barely averaging 15kph for most of them, but they keep my HR up so it's good Zone 1/2 work.

A couple more local rides and then the nearest tiles are all ones to be got whilst running (Battersea Park, Putney Heath, Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park, etc).

It's going to be nice when I can go for a local ride and don't have to think about Strava-ing it just for tiles.

  • I think I did 25000km since 2020 and have 5x5 tiles, lol

  • If you've not specifically tried to do this you do end up with masses of lines outbound and nothing connected. With a bit of effort it ramps up quick coz it's usually really easy to fill the gaps, at least, nearby. I went from 9x9 with trillions of km to 25 or something just doing some lunch rides and maybe a weekend ride or two.

  • Dropped a bike in for a service and walked to the office. Got two little squares and my Yardinho switched from round home to round work. Exciting, was not expecting! Need to join them up.

  • my Yardinho switched from round home to round work

Connecting the two (SW15 and old work in SE1 in my case) provided huge gains for me. Wasn't too hard as I had two different commuting routes (one North of the river, one South) so it just took a bit of careful planning to fill in the gap.

Small tile square up to 20x20, can bump it to 21x21 with a ride/run/ride today and then further progress will be done in chunks as I pick off individual areas (Wimbledon Park, Earlsfield, Wandsworth Common, etc).

Next blocker (to get me past 24x24) will be the small tile containing Wimbledon Tennis. I think it might be possible to just clip it scrabbling around the NE of Somerset House off Cedar Court/Somerset Road but not sure, otherwise it'll have to wait until Wimbledon next year (I usually go each year via a ground pass) or I'll treat the family to a tour before then.

  • I have no outgoing lines, I hate cycling pretty much everywhere apart from a few familiar routes.

  • So you've done the same thing over and over? Sounds even worse than me then. I guess getting into audax routes for training helped me a bit, otherwise I'd still be doing my A road loops.

  • Tile bagging might not be your thing!
