Well my problem was wheel flop causing the bikes to tip over when loaded, the spring seems to prevent this. No idea about their effect on shimmying I'm afraid.

I just connected the dots, I'm following your builds of course! Your cargo bike looks similar to an omnium mini which my friend had for a while, it shimmied very easily unless loaded. So it wasn't very good for everyday cycling, but very good at hauling. YMMV but it does sound similar.

Ok so finally got the weird ebay seller to hand this over to a courier today. Feeling reasonably certain that it'll turn up. I only asked for the frame, forks and wheels but there could be a lot of dirty goodies in there, not sure how much dismantling was done before it got wrapped up. Plan is drop bars, shimergo 2x8, probably juin tech cable hydros, GB guards. Parts bin build mostly but we all know how it goes. Possibly a dynamo wheel in the future or maybe it's time to try those reelight things.

Sounds promising, though ree-lights are only for being seen, not the lights I'd rely on to light up the way.
(have had both hub mounted and the bigger version with one box and two separate lights) -

Could end up in the Rags to Riches thread...fingers crossed!

Rags to Riches thread
Will check out immediately, never seen that thread!

It survived the trip, I think. Approximately 58 cm TT so all good so far!

Good info, a mate has them on his bullit and rates them for city use but obviously not for seeing when it's really dark.

Literally rags. We'll see about the riches. Cleaning began today, first instrument of choice a stanley knife to scrape off gunk. This is going to take a while...

Get some isopropyl alcohol / disc brake cleaner!

• #287
I've used WD-40, alcohol, white spirit and acetone the last few hours. As well as a brass brush on the fork surface rust. Starting to look pretty good and while there are endless scrapes and cable rub everywhere I've not found any dings or cracks!

Something oil dissolving like benzine is probably going to more efficient than spirits and acetone, but keep up the good work. Looking forward to see the build!

Sticky stuff remover would have worked a treat

Ok about to order some parts. Keeping it cheap and simple. Are kojaks ok for commuting and general city use, possibly some gravel roads in the summer? As in do they puncture easily? CRC have them on sale. Other recommendations in the 700 x 32-38 mm range?
-
• #291
Kojaks have been good to me and my mates. All year. Only tyre I have liked more for all year duty is Specialized Roubaix Pro 30/32c. I am on my second pair and haven't punctured yet riding in both UK and Denmark.
It is a tubeless tyre tho I've run it with inner tubes.ALSO in my experience the best way of removing stickers is heat gun / hairdryer first then white spirit as it is oil based and it seems to dissolve the sticky bit nicely using a rag.

Hold the phone, just found a pair of Vittoria randos in a box. The joys of hoarding. Also, a few minutes with a toothbrush and some petrol has uncovered what I believe to be a couple of derailleurs.

Not too bad
Edit: think this is the 2008 dew deluxe based on pics on konabikeworld.com. From the original catalogue:
Dew Deluxe is a notch more uptown than the Dew, which matters for those people looking to make their way up the social food chain.

Petrol did a good job on the mechs. Is the rear hanger snapped, and if so what are you thinking for that...?
-
• #295
Yup, snapped. Ordered a replacement yesterday. Also a pair of used juin tech R1s for £45.
-
• #296
Oh, a replaceable one. No problem then.

Looks miles better with the commuter stuff jettisoned and a bit of clean!
-
• #298
Looking forward to seeing this built up.
Also to hear your experience with the juin techs.. I am thinking of getting some for my vagabond. -

Spent the evening servicing the front hub. Cones pitted, natch. Found some in a box that looked reasonably similar and bodged it back together, had to use spacers to get OLN right though. And the dust seals don't fit quite right. Will have to do until I buy stuff to build new wheels. Hopefully the rear is in better shape, at least it's Shimano instead of some unbranded crap.

Couldn't get the front bearings right so decided to wet sand the old cones back into shape. 150-240-400-600 grit and then metal polish. Turned out ok. I've already given up on these wheels as they weigh a ton each and are fugly but I enjoyed the experiment. Ordered a pair of the arkose 'adventure gravel' wheels in the evans sale, cba to build myself this time.

Really like the 24" one for shopping and pootling!
How effective do you find the steering damper? Finding out that the cargo bike I've built has a tendency to shimmy a little with some weight on the front, when I take my hands off the bars. Something to help reduce that would be useful.
