  • OK So I have a dilemma.

    I have:
    1 x Genesis Equilibrium Disc frameset

    1 x Genesis Croix de Fer frameset

    I have a set of 650b wheels
    2 x 1.75 Gravel Kings
    1 x 1.5 Gravel King

    • pretty much everything else i need - mish mash, mainly 105 group/spyres

    I'm planning long day rides(200k+) and occasional touring. I only want one of them - dictated by space and budget.

    Do I build up the CDF with the 1.75 GKs front and rear or the Equilibrium with 1.75 rear and 1.5 front?

    Any pitfalls/pros/cons?

    Advice welcomed!

  • Are you intending to sell one of them or something? If not why not build up the Equilibrium with "lightweight" stuff for fast road days and the CdF with chunkier stuff for touring and/or comfort?

  • Have you tried the 1.75 in the equib? I was under the impression that you could only get about a 35c in it

  • Yep it fits in the rear but not the front - hence the smaller tyre.

  • Yeah I can only keep one of them.

  • I'd say for 650 wheels and big tires the CDF is better suited.

  • As ive got the equilibrium frame i'm intrigued to see the 650bs in there, I had a set and that was my initial intentions also but realistically whats the point of squeezing a 38 and a 35 in there max at 650b (I guess this doesn't account for space for guards?) When you can probably fit 32s in at 700c (gonna try this myself soon)

    If you want 650b and wider tyres I'd go with the CDF, but do you need them? Do you plan on offroading a lot? So far ive done some pretty rough stuff on 28s with guards on the equilibrium and been fine (apart from when it got real muddy and clogged up the gaps in the guards)

  • Yep I bought your wheels... :)

    My reasoning was that it will make the ride a bit plusher on the road, enable me to tackle a slightly broader range of surfaces and because YOLO - I'm keen to just give it a try.

    Either way, I'm happy to post pics of the wheels in the Equilibrium frame for your viewing pleasure.

  • Habe you considered BB drop? Is a 650b/1.75 equivalent to a 700c/23-28c ?

  • Judging by when I put the rear wheel in, the drop should not be significant. I'll try to get some pics at the weekend, if not before.

  • And have you considered the amount that large volume tyres at low pressures will roll to the side in cornering when looking at maximum tyre clearance?

  • Yes hopefully - hence the 1.5 at the front :)

  • Is this really a consideration? I would have thought wheel flex was more of a factor than tyre roll at the points where it passes through the stays.

  • Haha sorry to keep doubting. It’s just that someone measured roughly and I’m sure they said only up to a 35 or 38c clearance at the rear. That’s 1.5 right?
    I guess .25 isn’t much more

  • Nice dilemma.

    How heavy is the touring likely to be? And how rough might any off or gravelly road be? How hilly your longer rides?

    I've a 2014 cdf 725. Love it. Got it down to 9kg. I do almost everything on it. Winter, summer and occasional trail centres. It's solid and comfy. Would be fine for light touring at this setup and wheel strength. I do however pine for something lighter on the hills as that's where I have to dig deeper.

    If no rough/tough stuff equilibrium.
    If a bit lumpier and fuller touring cdf.

    Coin toss is a good way to test out your head/heart.

  • ^ this, how heavy is the touring, do you want to use racks etc, or do you plan on bikepacking?

    Also @user85857 9kg for a CDF is pretty good going considering the frameset is about 3kg from what i remember, got any pictures?

  • Here you go. There's a fair amount of Ritchey pro logic carbon. Extralite stem and skewers.

  • 9.7kg as it stands sorry. Bike shop scales must've been out.

  • Should've cleaned it first. Saddle bag weighs 270g. So c.9.5kg with pedals and some Bristol grit.
