There are cheaper ones but I think these are the most accurate. Build Army kits are a bit harder than official lego too imo. (A bit of instruction interpretation needed)

It’s easy to be a snob about these knock-off kits if you have been a Lego nut since childhood but there is some really good quality stuff out there. My son has just bought an ‘Arkham Asylum’ -ish model and it’s ace. Bricks clutch (hold together) really well - something even Lego themselves have struggled to achieve at times.
I reckon the only way Lego are going to survive is to buy the franchises for current hit movies etc. It’s going to cost them and us dear and, ultimately, the public will decide if it’s a working formula.

I was eyeing up some King sets (snide Technics) not "cheap" but I'm looking at vaulted sets that are only available 2nd hand and 💰💰💰

The Lego Ideas portal is a win win for Lego imo. It is crowd sourced so once a product reaches 10,000 votes the designers are already on easy street imo.

It is the 'fringe' kits that maybe might appeal to some that won't get to production.

They are rejecting the most Lego Ideas 10k sets though. 57 in the first 2021 review with 2 yes and 1 maybe. The vast majority of Lego sets are still home grown.

So after they get 10k upboats they could get made into a set that is retail packaged?

Is there any other tiers? Just a list of the parts that you can insta-add to a basket and a bunch of photos maybe. I guess it’s not the same experience and there’s all the quality control to worry about.

Lego Ideas sets that reach 10k but are rejected by Lego may go to the BrickLink (who are now owned by Lego) Designer Program which is crowdfund/pre-order. Presumably some don't for IP reasons etc.

I'm not sure that is true. They need to not be off trend (eg tanks) but some stuff like the typewriter is fairly unique and different to other things they have done.

Maybe more how it was done than what it does.

I imagine that would need licensing from tfl which isn't beyond the realms of possibility but adds an extra level of complexity and there will be a style guide which designs have to abide by.

Yup but TfL license loads of stuff including model trains and need all the money they can get their hands on.

The various Disney sets probably have equally complicated style guides. The Daily Bugle sign was apparently yellow in early designs but changed to red because Disney Says.

Yes, it's not insurmountable but it does add more hassle. Lego would need to speak to tfl, get an agreement in principle, etc before approving it.

As a standalone for Londoners, especially Shoreditch hipster types, it's quite nice, but the main market has to be people who already have a stretch of Creator Expert frontages, and the basement is going to make problems for them to add the tube station to their displays. For that reason, even in 10k people are in, I think Lego might be out.
