  • I'd be looking at a 57mm casing width instead

  • 30mm internal rim and clearance for at least 2.5 tyres. Anything less than that is for gravel riding.

  • I've found a PinkBike test which put's a 2.35 Magic Mary at 61.5mm casing width and 59mm tread width. Clearance around the casing really isn't going to be the problem looking at the section below, with some proper dimples I think I will take the plunge.

  • Pretty sure I’m riding 2.4’s or something at the moment and would gladly go fatter.

  • Then again, I'm still on 2.25 and shred the gnar hard

  • My 2.35 mezcal on i25 comes at 59mm. 2.35 Nobby Nic on I30 is a bit wider at 61 for casing , but thread is just 58mm.

  • This is why I wasn't very fussed, currently on 2.25 on 19mm rims, but then again the Kona is 30% road bike, 65% gravel bike, and maybe 5% gnar shredder. Would be nice to not want to replace this for a while though. And I just found out I can take the train to the Ore mountains and back for 24 euros, so I see more gnar shredding in my future.

  • Except for maybe half of it, but it looks good and they manage to squeeze 2.4 inch clearance out of regular chainstays. 2.6 at 430mm chainstay...

  • There’s also still that other steel frame, all tacked now. Starting to get properly excited for it, was planning on painting it myself but might go for powder if I can get some flake action like on the Kona and the Raleigh @Maj had done recently.

  • Could this be something nearing a final version? Not sure what to think of the proportions of 38mm downtube 35mm seattube and 31.7mm toptube.

  • He's asking if he should go for the slightly finer raster, or the bigger one.

  • The finer one appears to keep the bottle cage attached more securely

  • Still on the fence about skinny tubes with big radius bend in the seattube for a 27.2 seatpost vs burlier tubes with a sharper bend but for a 31.6 seatpost. Availability of 27.2 droppers isn’t as good as 31.6 but the PNW Rainier looks more than suitable and one good option is all I need.

    The skinny tubes could all come from Ceeway where the 31.6 tube selection would have to come from the US, but the price difference is virtually negated by the price difference between a PNW and a Brand X post. So that isn’t much of a tie breaker.

  • Know anyone with a lathe? You could get the bent Reynolds downtube that has a 35 or whatever mm ID and machine a sleeve “topper” for the seat tube cluster that has the same OD as the Reynolds tube but a 31.6 ID.
    It just needs a short step at the end so it can slot inside the seat tube, then braze it in and done.

  • If the dilemma is that you like the look of skinnier tubes. But only know of one fropper that you’d likethat fits. Go with them? If you like the look of thicker tubing, which also has loads of droppers that go into it. Go with them?

    If they, apart from dropper fit, performance wise are no different from each other. The. Its a question of aesthetics, no?

    I’d rather get one more day of riding the bike than worry about a detail like this. Whatever brings the bike to you the fastest would be my choice.

  • I think this hits the nail on the head. I'm worried about buying into an already obsolete standard, but that really isn't likely to be an issue. Aesthetically it's a toss up too, I prefer the big radius bend of the Zona tube but I also think the burly tubes are cooler. Then again, with a nimble frame that weighs 60kg on a bad day the skinnier tubes might be a better fit.

    I’d rather get one more day of riding the bike than worry about a detail like this. Whatever brings the bike to you the fastest would be my choice.

    I have time to mull this over because Phil still has some other projects he's working on. Which is exactly why I keep bouncing between the two options.

  • That's the 31.6 option, one of his bent 4130 tubes with that insert.

    But I'm going with the 27.2 option. I prefer the look and it saves the nasty surprise of a bad exchange rate and higher than expected customs charges.
