  • Get the Marino

Also, get a more reliable friend

    You're welcome

  • Wait are you saying you want to build me a mountain bike?

  • How nice of you to think of me, I'd be honoured.

Although I am also busy for a few weeks

  • a few weeks

@Tijmen - framebuilder weeks are slightly longer than regular weeks

  • Wait, no those are quicker than regular years

  • Yes, the opposite to that

    Let's call them 'Matt years'

  • I’m in no particular rush and I’d be honoured too. Let’s do it.

  • I’ve noticed. Not that I mind in any way, but I have noticed.

  • I’ll be in touch...

  • Nine months? Pffft... that's like standard framebuilder email response time ;-)

  • Some initial CAD mockups, rough ideas for a yoke and first hints of tube selection. Pre-bent Zona 29er tube would limit me to 27.2, but don't think that's too much of a problem as there's a decent selection of droppers for that diameter now? Current thinking is around 425mm chainstays, which seems to be tricky. But I think I'd survive with slightly less 'chuckability' if it comes to that. Seems mainly the bottom bracket bearings will be problematic in this scenario, will need to do a more detailed drawing.

  • Yoke would actually look like this.

  • Has this been resolved yet?

  • Yeah I'm basically finished.

    Who even needs yokes?

  • Pretty picture to celebrate having all tubes.

  • Happy to say the before mentioned quite heavy(especially now that the standert pfadfinder is referred to as pretty heavy in the gravel thread) Marino delivers. So nice Marino probably does too. Not to move business away from London, just saying.

  • Yeah I'm in no way opposed to Marino's work, but I have budding framebuilders literally throwing themselves at me so I'm not sure if I'll ever get to experience it myself.

What do we think of these clearances? Okay with some crimping or too tight? Tyre dimensions are as close as I can get to a 2.3 Racing Ralph, leaves just under 5mm to the tyre and 3.5mm to the 30t chainring.

This is acceptable according to John Prolly so I’m inclined to think it’s fine with a small crimp.

  • Ofc, just happy to say after not only weighing the frame but also having ridden it ;-)

  • 2.3

Even world cup XC racers are using wider tyres than that now!

  • Pics!

@BareNecessities Oh have I missed a trick? What should I be riding? The Kona won't clear a mm more than that and I've never really felt the need, should I aim at 2.5?

  • Not being overly serious ( as ever ), but for a general purpose ATB I'd be looking at 2.4" minimum. Lots of good tyres now available in 2.6", though there are of course compromises ( such as chainring clearance ) the bigger you get

  • I was wondering if there were things about the current design that would feel dated within a couple of years, clearance might be the biggest factor. It's so hard to predict what will be enough, the tyre you see in the renders above has pretty hefty shoulder knobs so it feels like a pretty safe bet but it's hard to be sure. I'm using a model of a tyre I've found online, I've scaled it to be a 2.4 inch tyre (742mm outer diameter), would anyone be able to take their calipers to a tyre of that size and see if this shoulder knob of 57mm width matches theirs? Of course it also depends on rim width, but it should be a pretty decent ballpark, I expect to go 25mm internal width which seems quite common.
