  • This is SO good.

Flicking through my '94 Specialized catalogue I see they were making carbon road frames with pretty small aluminium lugs. Looking at pictures they look basically the same size as standard steel lugs too. So, you know, you're in good company. Look up 1994 Spesh Epic comp and Epic pro.

Agree with everyone on masking up your face for carbon cutting, nasty stuff. Worked at a sailmakers for a while and we were cutting carbon battens all the time for $$$ race sails. We just used standard hacksaws, working slower with hand instead of power tools might give you a better chance of not shredding carbon all over the place (killer splinters too btw, itch like crazy)

Can't wait to see Frankenstein's carbon whip rise up.

  • Any updates?

  • Big updates yo

Currently on the train heading home, going to be building a jig and stripping some paint later.

Plan is to build jig, strip, snip some tubes, mitre some new bits and then glue glue glue

  • Agreed on the hacksaw thing! Although I’m going to use an angle grinder to cut the tubes initially cos I want lots of sparks

Like flashdance but with a bike, obvs

  • Spandex and leg warmers?

  • South West Trains, eh? This suggests you might be over my way.

Stay off my patch or I'll jack you up with my blade fool.

  • Phwoar had no idea how long it takes for ruddy epoxy to set when I started this. So updates:

I made a very hi tech jig:

And then I really went to town with the nitromors and a dremel to try and get all that paint off :

But fuck nitromors. Seriously, it’s the worst stripper ever. So I got on amazon and ordered me some mad fresh slag brushes and then waited for the internet to chill out on the new stranger things :

    Then yesterday :

Turns out it’s really hard to film whilst grinding but just so you all know I’m really good at it. Meant that last night I had this tube all in place and tacked :

  • Also m8 bring it. I got like 6 fresh slag brushes up in here and only two are partially used

  • I'm struggling to figure out how you got the carbon tube in there?

  • I just cut it to length, and mitred it using the programmed listed above. Then I just jammed it in innit.

Close up of my mad tekkers mitreing skills:

Because I had to flex the joint a fair whack I think I’m going to sort out the top tube first, then grind out the downtube.

  • I mixed up a load of carbon dust with epoxy and filled in the crack so it’s as if it wasn’t even there in the first place. Another reason carbon is better than steel bruv

  • I just cut it to length, and mitred it using the programmed listed above. Then I just jammed it in innit.

That makes more sense. I thought you inserted the tubes into the lugs.

  • Fuck this is amazing. God speed.

  • this is so rad

  • Anyone died yet?

    Sub'd

  • Also, Thread is TL; DR but for solid bond and finish on your carbon fillets / joints look at vac bagging the sucker.

  • Thread is TL; DR

Shut up - 4 pages of Forum Gold. Find the time.

  • I thought about doing this but I’d already spent upwards of 30 squids so I decided electrical tape compression was the way to go. I mean look at this finish (one wrap in) :

  • More more

  • @Tijs loads of material for you here. Wink wink nudge nudge.

  • Great thread already. When does it get moved to Rider Down?

  • I mixed up a load of carbon dust with epoxy and filled in the crack

Apparently, superglue (needs to be a one made with cyanoacrylate) and baking soda is used to repair chips in carbon fibre helicopter blades.

Sprinkling the soda on the glue causes is to go off instantly. Repeat glue/soda to build up layers and sand back.

  • I saw that video too.
