So what, is the lug still on there with the carbon tube on the outside of it?

This guy did it with a Yeti:

Shame the pics were on Photobucket

This is true. The lols write themselves
-
• #108
It is! Although it might have to be covered up, I might try and change up the method for the other tube but who knows.
I can always draw it back on with tippex
-
• #109
Naaaah I ground the lug all off. There was lots of sparks and it looked pretty cool.
I wanted to seat the tube over it, but I got the wrong size. So just mitred and carbon wrapped
-
• #110
Just make a dent in the top tube = genuine njs
-
• #111
so in the end all thats bonding the steel and the carbon is the thickness of the carbon tube and some wraps of carbon?
i´m all for supporting crazyness, but if this ^ is indeed the case, it sounds really, really dangerous and i´ld check my dental insurance coverage before setting off and riding it..!

Nah it should be fine Calfee does it

But with wood. Which as we all know they don’t ride in the tour.
-
• #113
Yeah, but the epoxy can actually penetrate the bamboo, so the bond is stronger than with steel. Hope you at least made sure all surfaces were fat-free (not intended as dietary advice) and properly sanded.
-
• #114
Ahh hoo I didn’t know that!
Wiped everything with nail polish remover and sanded it with 80grit, so should all be keyed ok. I’ll just not go down any stairs, should be fine

Speedvagen and English glue carbon seattubes into their steel frames, so it can work too.
-
• #116
Prep work sounds ok, maybe do a stresstest or two before riding though ;)
(not trying to rain on your parade or anything btw, I love crazy projects, just please don't throw safety completely out the window :) )
@Shl not saying that it can't be done at all, it's just harder to get a good joint than with bamboo or proper lugs, especially when the joint surface is small.

Wonderful thread. I love how your solution to your fame not being structurally sound is this.

• #118
^there is that; for sure.

• #119
Are you dead?
-
• #120
He did it because he could.
I'm loving this shit! It's this risk taking insanity that got our ancestors out of the caves and on to the savannahs. Yeah sure a few neanderthals got eaten by sabre tooth jaguars but it worked out for the rest of us.
Keep the lunacy going.

You're saying he IS dead?

It seems it killed him after all
This sounds kl anyone got a link? Apparently you can also mix charcoal with epoxy as another filler and then polish it down at the end too.
Second wrap in:
Don’t think I’m gonna have time to do the downtube this week so that is ON HOLD.
Gonna go countryside walk tomorrow and kick leaves and frolic and stuff
