Thanks Jack.
It has been curing all weekend in amazing sunlight, but I am afraid that the conclusion is that it still pretty soft. The black oxide has hardened up a lot more and seems like it might work on a bike, but I am afraid that Dodenkop won't be great at all. Handling it when sanding the dropout faces has scraped off the paint in places and the paint isn't really liking the brass fillets.
Different pigment pastas harden up differently and I am sure that I can get better results if I keep pushing. But Dodenkop + fillet brazed frame is not gonna work with my current setup, skills and knowledge. And I can just see how my new Witslingers framebag is gonna be abrasive on the paint and might actually end up looking shit it I can get the paint off the webbing etc. I am sure the frame it self won't be damaged by riding a season with linseed oil paint coating. So, do I 1) give up already now and get the frame powder coated, 2) patch up the scratches and ride the fuck out of it over the summer or 3) remove paint and try a harder curing linseed oil paint? 4) acknowledge that the industry is probably onto something I should be just listen and learn and teach myself to paint 2K? I even got a new mate who is able to teach me

i would ride like this and see how it holds up. you can still paint it differently later on.

Maybe the paint just needs more time to cure? I've read that 2-3 weeks for wet is normal, I think

1) give up already now and get the frame powder coated

That’s a bugger about the paint, but it still looks lush in the photos.
You can hand paint with 2 pack. Brush or roller. It you go heavy on the amount of coats you can then sand it flat and polish even matte finishes.
It’s no where near as dodgy as spraying it.https://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/mr4.pdf
I’ve roller painted a couple of cars in the past then sanded etc and I don’t think anyone noticed they weren’t sprayed. Just a thought.

Thanks. I'll think about that. I have some cheap is 2K boat paint I could try out while I invest a spray setup.
I am still keen on trying out more linseed oil experiments but I will do that on furniture I think, for now....
I will patch up the Dodenkop paint job for now and ride that until the fall. Gives me a chance to get my setup right so I am not dependent on shit powder coating with Long lead time. And if anything testing the pain job irl will confirm some things.
I've got that sweet sweet bag coming soon and waiting for some Stayer Cycles 30mm alu hoops on orange Hope hubs.

Maybe I am just being impatient.
You are right @schnizi
@BareNecessities I have had local chrome plating company do a chrome fork for a Viner pista restoration back in the days and it looked lush. But one thing is the environmental impact the other is I really don't need to add weight to this bike.
@revenant. It comes off with brown soap where shite powder coating requires sandblasting.

You will need to get the frame chemically dipped
This is a good point thank you. I will look into this.
Makes total sense about ferrous Vs non-ferrous.but you have to try these things to learn I guess.
It is not exactly information that is easily obtainable from where I am.
most likely will not be a durable enough for a bike frame.
Well, my other linseed oil tests with the black oxide paint suggests it could work, but this specific paint Dodenkop is definitely not durable enough for a commercial product that sits out in the rain. But my hope was that it would hold up to some riding and cleaning and then be stored in doors.
But thanks for you insights. It is appreciated. Now I've got to think through what next step is.
In your opinion, will powder coating require chemical treatment to get the oils off as well? -

They're like jazz. It's all about the absence of their comments - that's where there real advice lies hidden.

Don't paint what's there man, paint what's not there

I missed the last post and the drama(?). :D
What was user30954's advice on powdercoating after trying the linseed oil paint? Is chemical stripping needed or not? -
• #6075
Advice was good / no drama.
Basically linseed oil has penetrated the ferrous steel frame and there for needs a chemical dip before getting painted.
I am just gonna have to embrace knee warmers and get over it.
