  • Thank. There will be no actual 2xBB just fyi πŸ˜‚

  • Rad - is colour contrast (raw/chrome) chain stays and fork a β€˜thing’ ? Looking at this I think it could be 😏

  • Thanks. I don't think it is or should be :)

  • Double bb tho - blazing a trail

  • He he I just realized that it would need some kind of BB-junction. My inner dear Susanne got a bit carried away, but think of all the geometry gainz!

  • Out of curiosity, how much volume of argon would you typically use for a frame?
Or rather how many frames could you get out of one bottle?

  • I always enjoy these thread updates, love seeing the adjustments and improvements to frames

  • I turn up the argon a bit when doing thin wall stuff, but we are three people using my bottle and do all sorts of stuff so not really sure. It does not use up a lot in my limited experience

  • I get about 5 or 6 frames from my bottle, thats welding + purging. Its a 30l 300bar bottle, welding @ 8l/m

  • Works out about Β£10 per frame in gas.

  • Live feed is up

  • Got as far as I can with this repair. I need more argon. You can see my tacks are slightly contaminated. I'll clean everything up and fully weld BB to chainstays Monday evening. The brazing went alright and I think I'll file those tomorrow. Then back to powder coaters on Tuesday.

  • I love and hate the difference between us,

old hardrock frame, has a cracked chainstay, best I can do it scrap it without the kit / space to save it.

New stay, new life for the bike... maybe I should look to get things together

  • Being a designer / architect a part of my role is to make new things and create a desire for it with potential customers.
But as I've matured and taught myself how to make these things I've also fallen in love with the idea of preservation and repurposing. I love repairing and improving and try to implement these things in my own designs.

Obviously I could have just build my wife a brand new bike. It would probably have been faster by now, but there is just something about having "saved it".

My wife and I was giving our old Beogram 1203 turntable away on danish Gumtree. This guy got in touch saying that it was worth a bit more than nothing and that if we wished he'd repair it for us. We paid him Β£90 to do so and it's better than it ever. My wife has had that record player for 20 years and it is definitely ready for another 20.

  • That's a great attitude/mindset to have. Good stuff.

  • there is just something about having "saved it"

Preach! Long live the repairers, restorers, savers, and improvers. Less new stuff, more old skills.

  • Thanks guys.

I got it done. Not my nicest work but it will do for a "beater"

  • Looks good to me, another Mads project that makes quite a few people, myself included, wish they had the time and more crucially the skills to even attempt such a repair.
Nicely done fella. Keep em coming, one of my favourite threads. πŸ‘Œ

  • Thanks man

A little quickie weld sesh post work today. New pedal is great. But I can't wait to use it with my new torch as well. Waiting for a gas quick release to arrive before I can fit it.

Kona is done and ready for paint

Edit. Minus kickstand thing. Almost forgot that

  • weld looks great, cant wait to see what you'll do with the pedal next.

what colour is she going for? Also, i know the stays were shot through, but what was the powdercoat quality like this time? Any drrips?

  • RAL 6005 was the plan but they can't do that matte so we settled for 6009 which was my fav anyways.
When I went to pick up the frame as agreed they weren't done hence why it's white. It's the primer colour.

I'll go out there again tomorrow, if I finish the kickstand part and hopefully turn around will be a week. But you never know. They are a big company and dont like doing colour change for a small stupid bike. And they don't pay attention to detail. But I am also only paying Β£70 to get a frame, two forks and a rack done.

  • Alright. Everything is sorted now and ready for paint.
I redesigned the kickstand plate. Opted for four bolts and changed material to alu.

I am happy to be able to move on now.
Next up is TIG practice and engraving head tubes.

  • Saw the updates on instagram - mad skills. looking forward to seeing this one built up.

  • Thanks man. Should be a good little bikepacker/mum bike.

I've got some tricks up my sleeve as well. Been working on some custom mudguard hardware. Found some really cheap stainless steel mudguards that had nasty struts and hardware.

I'll see if I can finish then tonight.
