  • I'd be more concerned about the unsegregated, uncontrolled junction with Lionel Road South, at the top of your cropped image, where heavy goods vehicles would be turning left to get to the skip and container businesses located in that road, across the path of cyclists who have been directed into a classic left hook position thanks to the cycle track.

  • A lot of those heavy good business are temporary. Work has started on the new Brentford stadium.

  • Will that result in the junction of Lionel Road South being either closed to motors or signalised? Those are the only two things I can think of that would remove the increased risk created by installation of the cycle track.

  • Maybe there is increased danger there but it makes no sense to oppose the scheme as a whole when a better proposal us build the tracks and then upgrade it .

  • I doubt it will be closed... for next few years there may be more construction vehicles, So not good news. let's hope it eventually gets lights. But it's not going to be soon.

  • The Lionel Road South junction will most likely never be signalised, situated as it is 200 metres or so from signalised junctions in each direction.

  • I was thinking about this... one solution would to flip the direction of the one way. So instead of running south to north it could be from north to south.
    Not sure how the business there would feel but it would solve a lot issues for cyclist.
    It would make a mess of visiting a site by car/truck coming from the south circular.... But it's about time cyclists got some priority.

    Seems there's a campaign by local Chiswick conservatives to block it.

  • There was a quite well voiced campaign against it. The two main ring leaders were the Catholic church and cafe called outsider art on either end of the high road. However there was a good campaign to promote it so hopefully enough people have replied to feedback with support and build starts soon.

  • Key campaigners against CS9 appear to be:

    • The 3 Conservative Party councillors for Chiswick
    • Outsider Tart, the American cake shop at the East end of Chiswick High Road

    All of the Labour councillors for Brentford, and the Brentford & Isleworth Labour MP that represents Chiswick are all in favour of CS9, and the people I've overheard discussing it in cafes are in favour of change (mixed opinions on whether it's good or bad, but that generally the status quo was more bad than good).

    I hope my trying to get people to fill in the consultation has some sway in the matter.

  • I agree that the status quo is far from ideal - the high road is polluted and noisy and sitting outside a cafe really doesn't look like a nice experience. Cycling down it is a bit of an obstacle course and you have to be pretty confident at moving out and taking a lane etc. Hopefully whatever happens there'll be an improvement.

    The point is that cs9 and segregation will help encourage new cyclists as well as making it safer for current cyclists.
    We need a revolution.
    I know some one who drives from chiswick to Hammersmith daily, and he's a fit middle age male. He could save money on fuel and parking as well as time if this was built.
    He's part of the group of people that believe if your share a road with bus/trucks/cars is instant suicide.
    He is the sort of people we need to convince if this city wants to become a better place in one small way.

  • As far as high streets go chiswick is not too bad for cyclist already. It's quite a wide road and bus lanes help.

    There are no bus lanes on the High Road Eastbound, and Westbound cars park in it outside of rush hour peak making it useless.

    The roads are wide, but parking restrictions relaxed at the weekend... try cycling on a Sunday and it's a big car park with narrow lanes and the chance of being doored on one side or caught in a bumper-to-bumper obstacle course if you try and move into the lane to get space.

    Where the road appears to have two lanes (painted bits at junctions) it is just dangerous. An in-reality single wide lane splits into 2 lanes at every traffic lights, and immediately merges back into 1 lane after the lights, meaning that cars take the space cyclists are in before every set of lights.

    It's awful.

    And I've tried having coffee outside at a few places, and it's just loud and polluted. Would really adore it if the traffic was reduced, the lanes narrowed and what traffic there is pushed a little farther from the shop/cafe frontage, and that the shops embraced Parisian style decking and terrace seating.

    It could be the perfect High Road... if it were not treated as a main road.

  • I don't think tfl have any intention to reduce traffic by creating this cycle way.
    It's about utilising the space better and providing a safe space for cycling. Any attempt for traffic calming measures will be seen as anti business by those in charge council/tfl/government, just not going to happen, we are not Holland yet.
    They certainly don't care about anyones al fresco dining experience.
