  • Oh I thought you were using that green fork int pic.
    Still 26 wheels ye?

  • Nah that's a 700c fork that I just put on to see if the quill stem and bars fit etc.

Yeah 26" wheels. The problem has been trying to find wheels with a disc hub and rim brake track, which I want so that I have the option of using a 6-bolt fixie cog. There are plenty of wheelsets like that due to all the cheap mountain bikes that used to have a disc brake front and V-brake rear, I just haven't found any that are a reasonable price and either local or with postage.

  • Is it a 1 1/8 fork or a 1 inch? I have a 1 1/8 Kona P2 26er fork for v brakes sat here not being used.

  • Rumour has it you don't need a machined rim.
I've got a wheel for you if that's the case ;)
Re reading I see you want a pair.
    Hmmm.
You might have to build a rear with two types of braking options.

  • @-cv- It's 1 inch unfortunately. They're not rare, I just need to get off my arse and ride over to a shop to buy one. Fortunately for me there is a charity that recycles old bike bits nearby, so they've got all sorts of weird parts for sale. I just need to take the old fork in and find one to match. I'm not doing anything this evening and they're open late so I'll go over today. (Unless I go during work hours it's only open late on Wedsnesday and Saturday, and unbelievably I've been busy pretty much every weekend and Wednesday for weeks.)

@.mo. If I don't get this wheelset that's on eBay I might just bite the bullet and buy a front/rear separately or build a wheel myself. Again one of the problems with that approach is that people don't sell things unless they're worth a few quid, so there aren't many hubs on eBay for £2 or whatever.

  • people don't sell things unless they're worth a few quid,

Knew I'd been doing it wrong.

Sold an FD .99p free postage. FFS.

listings that end on Sundays usually go quite cheap, or ones that end before 9am.

  • Yeah, I've got a few searches saved so that I get an email every day, so hopefully I'm seeing nearly every set of 26" MTB wheels that goes up on there.

Actually forgot to mention, I did buy a 10-speed MTB shifter that's in the post. Going to try to file down the clamp and get it on the road bars.

  • As an example here's an ideal wheelset that went up for sale today/yesterday: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253271081301

£45 inc. postage is a bit much though. On the other hand I guess that includes new tyres... but I'd prefer semi-slicks as this bike'll just be transporting me to and from the pub, the office, etc.

  • If they stay at that price buy em.
New 26" rims are like £20 each then tyres and all postage.

  • Buying some truly awful parts for this today. Still no fork... It was pissing down on Wednesday and I've got a cold and no mudguards, so didn't fancy getting cold and damp. Stayed in and fixed our radiators instead, so it was nice and warm.

  • that saddle looks pretty good, where did you order?

  • I think it's hideous but whatever floats your boat. Triton Cycles

  • I wasn't being all that serious, was more thinking along the lines of passive theft prevention.

  • Ah right, that's partly my reasoning too. And £2.50 for a working saddle is hard to argue with.

  • Got this fork + headset for a bargainacious £4. Steerer may be ever so slightly too long so might have to cut it down (not a problem). Front rack mounts are a Brucie bonus

Triton stuff is delayed but should be here tomorrow. So that's the disgusting saddle, chunkyboi slicks, disk mount cog. 10-speed chain and inner tubes have arrived from CRC already. Wheels are the only thing missing - I attempted to buy that £45 set above but was sniped and didn't get them. Enquired about another set but owner isn't keen on posting. Actually I think I need a crank bolt thing as well.

Bought a 10-speed X7 shifter too. I asked for the clamp too but the guy didn't post one and is now telling me it's an extra £10 for that. It was a nice chunky one that I was going to file down to fit the road bars. I also need some pulley-wheel bolts that are in the post. When I get all that stuff I think I'll buy this foul cassette that seems like it'll fit with the aesthetic. For now though it looks like fixie is going to be the easiest way to get it up and running.

  • Ah, lovely! That would have been perfect! The colour is great. Orange fork and greeny-yellow frame - it would have looked like I'd gone ballistic with highlighters. 1"1/8 steerer though so no good for this bike.

Actually that post reminds me that I still need a seatpost as well. I think I'm going to have to ride it to the shop without a saddle. Or zip-tie a saddle to the frame.

  • wait wait wait
you need 26 inch disc wheels? I have a set that I was gonna put on my On-One but that idea is getting scrapped, you can have them for 25 quid posted if that helps you, they come with knobbly's and QR's. The rear doesn't take a rim brake but the front does, and the back of it is a freehub so i'm 99% sure it's 10spd compatible

(if you can get to Coventry, you can have them for a tenner)

  • Hmm, sounds like they might work. I'd have to go fixie with no rear rim brake track. But I could always buy a rear rim brake wheel separately at a later date. Seems like they might do the job then!

I'll be in Birmingham some time before the 23rd of Dec so might be able to come and collect them then, the problem with that would be that I'd have to take the wheels up on the train with me which is a little inconvenient, so postage might be the better option. Let me figure out what I'm doing over Christmas and I'll get back to you

  • I think I might take those wheels if you've still got them and are willing to post? Knobblies could be handy and I could just have a spare back wheel.

I also bought one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282631114242. £24, rim and disc, 10-speed freehub, free postage. That'll do for the geared option.

Also bought some cheap SRAM TT-500 shifters so I'll go bar-con if I do run it geared. They'll also be handy if I ever decide to go full tourer on my other bike. I'll still be trying to get the MTB shifter working in the mean time.

I'm thinking if I get a second quicklink I can splice two bits of chain together and have a short chain/fixie option and a long chain/additional section that will be the right length for gears. I can actually switch between the two mid-ride then if I ever need to do that for some stupid reason.

    To do list:

    • cut down steerer or find some spacers
    • find a cassette
    • find a seatpost
    • buy some cheapo M5 bolts for 6-bolt cog
    • assemble everything.

Would be nice to have it done by Christmas.

  • I've had a wheelset come into my hands over the past week that's disc compatible, matches and I don't need it- so i'm more than willing to send it to you for the price of postage :)

Will try find a box and get back to you asap

  • Ah, brilliant! No rush at all.

  • Just to add, its a weird shade of olive/tan too haha.

  • Even better! 26" and rim brake front, right?

This bike is going to be hideous

  • That wheel I bought is branded "Redneck XC1". Fucking lol
