  • Hijacking this awesome (and sad at times) thread - NW silver chainrings, do they exist? Just for aesthetic reasons, retro conversions, silver components and all.

  • They do! I have ordered this cheapo stuff from Taiwan (the silver was already sold out).
I guess the more common BCD's will have higher amount of colour options to choose from.

  • Seems the J&L rings on eBay come in silver. Out of stock in 130/110mm BCD but there are 4-bolt 104mm BCD ones.

  • Haha, great minds!

  • Rad, thank you!

By the way on chain retention, there is a Paul thingie kicking about on UK eBay atm...

  • Damn, shitty about the incident, but sounds like you've been lucky. Hope the Marin is rolling again soon!

  • Very lucky indeed!
Got the Marin home today, I'm not entirely sure if that frame didn't get twisted a little bit... But we'll see.

  • Shit luck about the bike. The crimp if the chainstay why don't put one in the other chainstay and give yourself some more clearance.

  • After all the Marin did not survive the crash, I finally had the chance to ride it (after the rear wheel was repaired). Once I let go of the handlebars the fork turns right, and the whole bike starts to fall to the left. Pity. But at least everything else is working fine, so I'll only have to get a new frameset, which I will do in the next week or so.

  • Bought another frame, a Diamond Back Axis this time. Double butted True Temper OX tubing, originally equipped with full XT. Now let's hope this one won't be dead on arrival...

  • Hello there. Should be finished by the weekend.
Picture doesn't do the justice but the paint is actually some kind of pearlescent (?) with a grey base and blue glittering. Amazing stuff.

  • Finding a 73 mm BB with a right spindle length wasn't exactly easy, this one is probably going to be a tad too short, so I'll might have to use a different crankset. Everything else is fine so far though.

Gave it some good ol' scrub since the picture of course.

  • Shame about the Marin. That Diamondback looks tasty though

  • shame about the Marin. those diamond back frames are nice though, I had an axis in my youth. I saved up for it for ages! can't remember what happened to it though...
mine was a rich dark green colour with some sparkle in the paint. 1993 maybe?

  • Couldn't find any 93 catalogs so can't confirm, but should be around that era. :) Love the paint jobs of these old DB's, they all look fantastic!

  • Will look tastier built up! Very soon I hope.

  • mine was almost exactly the same as this...although this is an apex which was the model down i think. probably the same frame, but axis had higher end components

some info on this thread on retrobike that might help identify the exact year (if that's important to you?)
seems like yours might be a '91 as the graphics on my '93 were more of a 'script' style font than a squared font on yours...
do the gear cables run along the top tube, or the downtube?

  • Mine is a 1992 for sure. :) It's in the '92 catalog, grey with blue pearl colour.

  • Aaaaaaaand done! Sort of. Fork and/or headtube is bent a tiny bit but it is rideable. Whole bike leans to the left once I let go of the handlebars, so this will be quite a journey to fix. :P

  • Nice! Hope this one lives longer!

  • looks great!
regarding the issue of leaning to the left, it might be that the rear wheel wasn't dished properly when it was rebuilt?

there are some other useful tips you could try on this thread as well...

  • I don't think that'd be the issue, but there is a chance. I'll talk to some local repair pros and we'll see... But I'm pretty sure it will be the fork.
