  • Looking good man! How are the new tyres?

    I would encourage you to get a NW ring or something though, I went over the bars the other day after my chain came off whilst I was standing up on the pedals! Cross-chaining, weak derailleur springs and dodgy old worn chainrings is probably not the safest combo.

  • New tyres are absolute fire, rolling resistance is way better. Getting a new chainring soon, but I won't got with NW right away, cuz money. :) I can probably get a proper full teeth one for cheaps. Thankfully my sprockets are in a great shape, and my derailleur is almost pristine with perfect springs.

  • I might have accidentally bought a late 80's - early 90's Longus MTB frameset with a 54x54 cm frame. I might have bought a 42T narrow wide chainring too.
    MonsterLongus sounds fishy, so I'll edit the thread title accordingly. :P I'll transfer all parts to the Longus, and probably going make a drop bar conversion sometime...

  • Got hit by a car today (he ran the red light). With a ridiculous amount of mere luck I am okay, but MonsterMarin is most probably at the state of no return...
    A bonus point for rebuilding it all to the Longus then! Rear wheel is wrecked, everything else can be fine, but I don't have it with me atm.

    These Longus frames are pretty cool, you can easily build it as a great commuter or tourer. And I like the color scheme, a couple of Longus frames I saw were of a really good quality.

  • Cheers lads! Well the colour scheme is plain white with red stickers, so yeah, nothing fancy, but it looks okay. I'll try to recover asap, then I will build it up immediately.

  • I'll mourn the loss of monster Marin brethren. Look forward to seeing the new bike though! Hope the injuries heal up soon.

  • Thank you for the comments guys, I'm healing up nicely, but I still didn't have time (and leg strength) to get the Marin back.

    The investigation is still going (not sure why, I mean my light was green, his had to be red lol).

    Tomorrow I'll get the Longus to my LBS for some general checking.
    Here's a super trash pic of the frameset:

    The problem is that it has a not-too-healthy-looking dent on the inside of one of the chainstays, which might cause issues in the future... We'll see. Also, rear hub spacing is 130 mm, will have to stretch it out to 135 mm.

  • Do you have a pic of the chainstay dent? Coldsetting a steel frame from 130 to 135 isn't difficult and shouldn't damage the frame (any further)

  • Here's the dent. It looks and feels like it was repainted with some nail polish or something. The surface is a bit rough too there.

  • Thanks mate, most of the stuff are probably salvagable, we'll see. There's a small chance that the frame itself survived and the rear wheel took all the damage.

  • Good news is that the Marin's frame actually does seem intact, but the rear wheel is probably wrecked beyond repair. Also the saddle got some bruises. Otherwise the whole bike looks fine!
    I'll try to get a rear wheel asap.
    And the Longus frame won't work out probably, lbs guys told me that the dent is pretty damn serious...

  • How on earth did the previous owner manage to dent it on the inside of the chainstay?

  • They told me at the lbs that there's a good chance the frame was from a stolen bike, and when they cut away the U-lock it bent the frame there. No info about the actual origin of the frame, I bought it off from a local FB group, so yeah, the possibility is there. Gonna throw the frame itself away, but I'll keep all other components, maybe I can use them someday.
    Pity though, so few retro MTB's come with this kind of geometry (almost square st-tt length).
