Eric used to make the best podcast about photography (the halftone) and now seems to be acquiring rivendell’s at a frightening pace, nice videos if you’re that way inclined -

A good place to ask considering Grants dislike of disks.
In 2022 apart from Paul, what canti brakes are the Mustard?

Never used em, but Velo Orange do a set that get some decent reviews. Or just whack a v brake on there (admittedly not as elegant).

Tektro CR720s are not bad.

In terms of braking power, I rate old-school shimano low-profile cantis from the DX or XT series like these. Once they’re set up properly, they work pretty well when combined with kool stop eagle pads. Never had any problems with them and felt safe descending with them on a loaded tourer in the Pyrenees. Smooth post cantilever brakes can be VERY frustrating to set up but they offer more adjustability than threaded post cantis. I’m not a big fan of tektro CR 720s tbh.

Dia compe do a few. I like the looks of the dc980 so that’s the only one I’ve used. The 988s are like those xt described above and 999s are are proper jan heine style. All fairly reasonably priced compared to mr Paul.

Not a CR720 fan here either.
V brake pads on a canti seems like a great idea but I've tried the 720s and some Avid Shorty and neither worked as well as a proper smooth post pad brake.
I tried a Suntour SE rear on one of my bikes a while ago and didn't really rate it but then I put one on Mrs M_V's latest bike and got it working really well so I'm trying one on the late 90's hardtail project I'm building just now.

I have found low profile cantis to be much better than wide ones. Either way they need careful adjustment.

Build up a Simple One bought from the forum, with some bits and pieces I’ve had stored away. Maybe the stem isn’t right but it’s all I’ve got that fits, tried to be as Rivendell as I can!

Is that a new Riv? I can't remember if you already had one.
Looks a proper 'country' bike. Lovely.

I built a dumb Onyx/Son/LB wheelset last year. It's strange but I do kinda like it. Coasting is quieter than pedaling because no jockey wheel contribution. (Managed to blag an industry discount, otherwise it would have definitely been something cheaper and noisier.)
