  • @MisterMikkel if it isn't broken...
These shimano 200GS chainrings have a very weird & inconvenient plastic coating that I've never seen before.

  • I always thought that these 200GS cranksets were press fitted together lol

  • Bearings are the right way round as you have them.

If either the cups, cones or bearings have any pitting it could be very hard to see with the naked eye but will feel very obvious when it's all assembled. That said, it might not even be noticeable when riding and it won't kill you.

A big upgrade to the feel (and look) of the bike would be a proper crankset, rather than the disposable noodly thing you have. Try get down to a bike jumble or coop, you should be able to pick up a decent Shimano square taper for not very much at all.

  • Hey Tom,
thanks for this! I'm going to bin that BB and hope the newish UN55 I have lying about fits okay. Going to use the original headset bearings for now, as long as it's smooth ish.

I'll have to locate a crankset on the 'bay/lfgss for now because there is no cycle jumble near me until one in Sheffield in October.

  • Nice project looking forward to seeing the build

  • rad to power of fun

  • So tonight I had a little bit of time so I put the headset back in with the original bearings. Measured the diameter as 37mm and this is on the 'as and when' to do list. Managed to have another look at the bottom bracket - the UN55 68mm spare I had lying around is shorter than the original one. For speed/cheapness and convenience I'll stick with the original for now.

stem/ bars cleaned up. I tried to fit a 25.4mm bar but it was too big - I need to get on google and see what the circumference is. Stem back in

-To do: strip + clean hubs (o.g. wheels will do for now), see what range the 200gs derailleur has
-To buy to get momentum going: good quality square tapered mtb crankset, jockey wheels, chain, pedals, wider bars, levers, v brakes, cables
-Less urgent things to buy: 7 speed cassette (or research and see if I can go to 8/9 on the hub/ with the 200gs mech I have)
-As and when: use parts bin seatpost, bb, headset, longer stem, wheels, decent seat, 26" tyres + tubes

  • Wouldn't worry about a shorter BB, especially if you go 1x. As long as the chainring clears the stays

  • Might not go 1x after all. With getting a better crankset now as you recommended it just depends; if something comes up with good condition chainrings, there would be no point spending extra money on a 1x setup at this stage

  • Started paying some attention to the wheels but I've lost my cassette remover...
New tyres on and given the rims/spokes/hubs a good clean.

  • What size are those city jets? Look mahoosive.

  • No way, I run big apples 26x2.15 and they don't look as big as they do!!

  • Been super busy but managed to get the wheels moving on this project. (semi-intentional pun). Never really serviced a hub wheel before but took everything apart, cleaned it, kept the order that it came out in and put it all back together with liberal amounts of grease. Also cleaned the cassette and decided not to buy a new one. Annoyingly on the rear, it doesn't sit right in the drop out even though the spacing looks pretty even and I took some paint of the dropouts forcing it in.

  • Cheaped out on some V brakes on ebay for like £12... Got some nice SPD/flat pedals off here thanks to @walkmanman. Chain, jockey wheels, crankset needed then I can have it all together. Once it's being ridden, V brakes may be upgraded, the bottom bracket will be replaced and a few other bits.

  • Moving slowly but moving: Cleaned up the rear derailleur but currently waiting on new jockey wheels arriving. Chain on the way. New brakes have arrived, new cranks (Shimano STX 175mm) and some cool SPD/flat pedals thanks to a chap on here. Just need cables and a chainring now for it to be 'finished' but if it is getting used it may get some treats down the line.

  • Has anyone got a chainring spare that they'd sell (5 bolt, BCD 94mm) please? All about £30 on eBay/ chain reaction and the choice is very limited. This is £11 but mehhh http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DMR-Saturn-Ring-1x-Chainring-4-bolt-104BCD-or-5-bolt-94BCD-Retro-MTB-NEW-/263147064049?var=&hash=item3d44c98af1:m:muYLL1vMKRq0B_smbK2kuJw

  • Bike is finished! Chainring is abominable, but it was £12 on a build which was under £100 all in. Original rear mech was too bent to work so it has been replaced and Cycles in Motion (Sheffield) gave me a hand at the end. DSLR shots over the weekend hopefully..

Thanks for all the help + advice.
