  • I couldn't eliminate the judder on my Swiss Cross, so I switched the front brake to Paul MiniMoto. It wasn't a cheap option, but I've had it for 2 years now and with the Koolstop salmon pads, it's been very good.

  • I was thinking more beermat width, but credit/nectar card would do!

  • Judder seems to be mostly sorted, now getting tempted by Force 1/CX1 stuff.
    Pretty practical with one less shifting cable, and fits the bike purpose.

    I've put SRAM red on my Caad10 and getting on with the double tap.

  • Force 1 medium rear derailleur, Rival 1 shifters, Raptor 40t narrow wide chainring (to be used temporarily with 105 or cx50 cranks) on the way!

    Still need 11-36 (or 11-32) cassette and chain then I can start building.

  • Force 1 BB30 cranks, how fiddly to get them in 68mm BSA? Something like the Rotor BSA30 or Praxis BSA30 BB perhaps?

    I believe the force cranks have a longer Axle.

  • Check it, but I don't think the 30mm ø axle is longer than standard, only the gxp.

  • Either it will be a case of removing the preload collar and spacers, installing a wavey washer and using it with a rotor BSA 30 BB....

    ...or it wont work at all :)

    As above, first thing would be to measure the axle. I suspect Force 22 cranks have long axles as they are the S975 cranks that always had long axles...

  • So I'm taking a bit of a gamble - Bought force 22 BB30 chainset to go with a Rotor BSA30.
    Starting well, as I've discovered the BSA30 needs a spanner that is different to hollowtech and wasn't included... No wavy washer either with the BB, so had to salvage one from elsewhere...

    So the build bits:
    Force 22 cranks BB30 165mm with 42 1x ring
    Force 1 medium cage
    1170 11-36 cassette
    Rival 1 shifters
    Superstar Arc31 wheels
    Schwalbe G-0ne 35mm (with inner tubes, cba with tubeless yet)
    Avid Shorty Ultimates with Koolstop Salmon

    Pretty standard gravel bike stuff
    For dodgy commuiting weather, probably going to put some ugly crudcatcher 3s on, the frame has mudguard/rack mounts, but the fork doesn't have tabs or drilled.

  • Got a Rival 1 long cage at 265g whereas a force 1 medium cage is 263g, hmm...

  • Got round to starting this build now that the B.B. spanner has arrived.
    Now find that I don’t have the right depth chainring bolts...

    Anyone know where I can source force 1 chainring bolts? No joy with my google hunting.

    I’m assuming normal shallow chainring bolts will work, but possibly need to take off spider to not worry about the hidden bolt?

  • Build has stalled...
    Assumed that a Hope BSA30 spanner would work for a Rotor BSA30 bottom bracket.
    Of course it doesn't!

    Some prep done, ready for a tightened BB and chainset to be installed, cabling and we're pretty much there.

  • I bought a knock-off Rotor BSA 30 BB from ebay and installed it with a regular BB spanner that does Ultra Torque ones, not sure if it's the same spec as the regular Rotor ones though.

    The bearings on these things are fucking tiny and pretty minimally sealed so I'm looking forward to changing it pretty regularly : /

  • Have you eyeballed if you'll need spacers btw? Should be pretty straightforward to calculate.

    Asking as anything Rotor is a pain in the pisser so it might be easier to change tack now... That said, I installed Rotor 3d+ on my steel bsa 68mm frame ok and didn't need any spacers bar a couple of turns on Rotor's built in adjuster on the non driveside crank so a wavey washer or two might just do it.

  • I’ve got a wavy washer to go on, which some research suggests is all that i’ll need. I’ve removed the preload collar and spacer so the force 22 crank should fit.

    Tried my hollowtech spanner on the BB, no luck. As you say, the bearings don’t appear very well sealed but i’ll give them a go.

  • Got the spanner, and finally got the BB tightened.

    Removed the preload collar and spacer on the Force cranks.

    The width of the BSA30 bottom bracket is 91mm.
    From looking at a variety of diagrams it looks like I need to add spacers to bring it up to 93-94mm + Wave Washer ±2 0.5 mm shims. Naturally I don't have any spare shims anywhere.

    Does that sound right? There are no clear instructions anywhere, as rotor only provide instructions for their Rotor cranksets, so I have looked at Sram's guide for BBRight installation (79mm BB width + 13mm spacer drive side and 2mm + wave washer) and worked backwards.

    For BB386, with its 86.5mm width, requires 3.2mm + 2.5mm washer for a total of 92.2mm ± 2 0.5mm shims + wavy washer.

  • 2mm of spacers drive side and 1mm spacers non drive side seems to have done the trick.
    All components now on, ready for indexing and bar tape.

    Using Shimano outers and a shimano polymer brake cable at the front, and normal steel at the back has improved brake feel massively. The shimano outers are a lot more supple than the Jagwire ones I had before, which is useful to know for future small bike cabling.

  • Got myself an etap groupset and had a difficult choice of which bike to give a makeover.

    Venge would be obvious choice, but I have GXP sram red cranks.

    Currently the Venge has DA9000 and powermeter, and didn’t fancy getting the red calipers, which seem really sensitive to short cable runs (XS Bike frames)

    CAAD10 has hollowgram and stages, 10 speed sram red and da7900 brakes so would be a fairly simple switch, but with same issue with brakes. Also my turbo bike, so bit of a waste.

    The Ritchey Breakaway currently has force 1x, and given its raison d’etre, wireless shifting seems a good idea. Also has Shorty ultimates so should play nice with SRAM brake cable ratios.

    So Ritchey is going etap, and either CAAD or wife’s bike is going 1x.

  • Nice bike (the ritchey), not sure how I missed this thread first time around. Have you taken it apart for travel yet? Any pics?

  • Had planned to take it to the Jura the last two times I went, but in laws brought our French resident bikes over, and the last couple of overseas trips had all our luggage allowance used up by toddler paraphernalia.

    Thinking about doing some weekend dedicated cycling trips so hopefully will lug it around more.

    At the moment it’s more of a fancy commute bike.
