A crude packing with rinko type bag (read: fairmean) might work on continental trains i reckon .. just split cables and frame, take wheels apart and tie it to backpack or summat

Even if the handlers treat it well, bikes merely wrapped up in cling film can still fall from the loading conveyor belt from a great height = dead bike. I'm sticking with hard case in all situations I can work with it.

I agree. I've done both and, if I ever get the chance to have a cycling holiday ever again, I'd go hard case everytime.

He's right... structurally it would hold up better assembled.
Assuming that the bike is thrown on the top of the pile of bags.
Which isn't a good assumption.

I just used the ground, but it's still useful for topping up the tyres on a longer tour where you don't want to remove the wheel every time.

I just put the but of my hand at behind the rim/ valve, as ive had both valves snap off on me before.

My bike has suffered some small insults when in the Evoc, but I've been back and forth to the US with various bikes in it and been happy every time (BA broke stuff on the return).
I'm building a bike with couplers at the moment so it fits in the car.

I thought I'd do that to mine too... but roof racks are just too convenient and if camping, etc and have car... then bikes still fit in the car with wheels removed and seats down and the car is a mini.

Yeah and technically police are meant to uphold the law and technically bankers are meant to act in the interests of their investors and technically guards should know the rules about bikes but in reality if they don't let you on, you're a bit fucked.

Technically I think the rule on British railways is "baggage must fit within a 1m x 1m x 1m space" and that applies at peak hours on trains and all the time on "deep stations" on the underground.
That is what permits folding bikes, and I find the 1m3 rule a lot easier to understand than the "this bike yes, that bike no" stuff.

Would a bicycle considered a bicycle once disassembled? the ticket guard seemed to be happy with it.

The actual rule doesn't care what it is that you're carrying... just whether the total of what you're carrying on a train/tube fits within a 1m x 1m x 1m space.
A full-sized bike in bits probably doesn't, and you probably can't move it around easily.

If there was/is surely it would be X amount away from crown? They cant guarantee what wheelsize you're using.
Also i thought i understood this build but now its confusing me, i thought you wanted something in a nice stiff steel and the reason for not going disc was that it compromised this feeling? And now you're putting a rack on it, does loading it up not have similar affects?

I dont think adding a mid fork braze on will affect stiffness ..
Just 'future-proofing' if I take it on anything other than a bike packing credit card tour.
Also 700c.

I wonder if S&S get around the "no full size bikes on this peak hour train service" type deal?
I remember having to help a US woman in Majorca put her S&S bike together. She could manage the frame but the cable joiners were too hard for her. She needed Di2 brakes :)
