  • Oh come on. My tongue is so firmly in my cheek. Hence with?
    Come on.

  • If, and it's a fucking big if, anyone played for England from dcfc. And scored a goal. I'd be insufferable.

  • Why the fuck are England continuing with a formation just designed to justify Roonys place in the team? Kane looked shithouse but its a system that has pretty much everyone playing out of position. Vardy didn't really do much other than grab a scrappy goal.

  • Because Woy doesn't know what the fuck he's doing...

  • You're insufferable anyway...

  • got to say, as much as it pains me, Rooney didn't have too bad a game. Vardy's not built for the group stages unless he's playing against a team who think they can give us a good shoeing, so we can play on the counter. Need to put in Stones instead of Cahill or Smalling, as they are pretty much the same player just with different skin tones, and when playing against a team that is dropping deep and conceding possession, you need a ball playing center half who can bring the ball upto the half way line and then find Dier, rather than the defensive dopplegangers getting scared when they tried to attempt a pass that wasn't square..

  • that's my point though, although Rooney had an Okay game. The entire formation is designed for him to have a good game, everyone else just dicks about out of position looking a bit lost.

  • Well, that went entirely as expected

Sturridge to get a goal or two (I'm making a possibly unwise assumption that he's actually fit) and England to win 2-1.

If only I'd actually believed that and put some money on

  • Today just kind of mildly glosses over the failing of the current formation. The one wide player, Sterling, is devoid of any confidence and has done the square sum of fuck all in the two games.
You then have a bunch of strikers none of whom gravitate out wide and a three man midfield which is designed to play narrow and keep things tight. Our full backs are asked to create all the width and whilst they try hard their end product in the two games has been shocking.

There is also a real lack of invention to England's football because our midfield find it hard to change tempo. Alli and Dier are both talented players but I would have Wilshere playing with them.
A four man midfield of Rooney, Alli, Wilshere with Dier sat behind them offers more ingenuity. Though I thought Lallana had a good game.
Vardy and Sturridge or Kane up top next game please

  • Imagine Germany having Leroy Sane on the bench and bringing on Schuurle and Gomez. LOL

  • I thought England were alright. Kane is tired, does he score many set piece goals (headers, scuffed shots in the box)? That might explain why Roy had him taking corners. What's the point of being in there if you're not that type of player ? Like giving the ball high in the air when crouch was on the pitch.

I thought sturridge's goal was fortunate, it broke to him an the keeper should have done better. Both vardy and sturridge got in on a tired defence. Which is good, it's good to have players who make an impact when they're on the pitch.

Wilshire may be missing but I'm not sure just "fucking running around" with his head up and bum out is what we need. It's not worked for sterling. And then lallana. He looks neat and tidy, but what does he do?

    As for Joe hart.

We're through, it looked like a tough day in the sun.

  • Eric Dier, rapidly emerging as a proper force in this tournament à la Owen Hargreaves at the 2006 World Cup

    @cornelius_blackfoot
    yes?

    Is he off to Bayern?

  • I'd go for a 4-4-2 diamond in the next game, with Sturridge and Vardy up top and Dier, Alli, Lallana then Rooney at the tip of the diamond.

  • Woy showed his broadside and it paid off... 'just'.

Amazing to watch the Germans get muffled by the Poles.

I noticed the Polish defenders get right on the toes of the strikers and block.

    Take note.

  • One thing that gives me some interest in this England team is that we have fire power off the bench. I can't remember having that before in a tournament.

  • uh, was i the only one watching the england game where dier consistently overhit long passes / crosses? (trying too hard). smalling and cahill did a great job and i wouldn't mess with that combo.

rooney was england's best player. again.

and was a great second goal by england. brilliantly deft touches by vardy and alli as well sturridge.

  • Can anyone enlighten me on the machinations of the 3rd place qualifications? If we top the group, how is it decided which of the 3rd place teams we play - A, C or D?

  • see @jonny 's reply above.
I thought he had a good game and was thinking ahead of the players in front expecting movement and hitting the pass, which then looked over hit as the players in front apart from Lallana weren't making the run he was anticipating.

He's off nowhere, 2nd season making an impact, 1st as a high class defensive mid, we're looking to find someone to challenge him, not replace him.

Tried not to watch the build up, but the puffing up of Dele Alli and Rio's blatant attempt to sell him off before he's actually achieved anything was...

Felt like that very English football thing of hyping up anyone who shows any sort of prowess to world class without them actually achieving anything. He's good, hopefully he'll get better, but he's not in the game changing/game dictating league of other midfielders plying their trade in Europe's elite.. Not yet anyway, has lots of potential, and I'm looking forward to him playing for Spurs as he achieves some of it..

  • Also J Wilson putting the boot into Marc Wilmots and his leadership of the Belgium squad

  • is it over yet ?

  • Well zis was disappointing.

  • This is exactly my team for the next game - when you look across the teams in the tournament possibly only France and Belgium can offer comparable attacking talents to the England squad - Sturridge, Vardy and Rooney on the same pitch is plenty of goals. If Roy has stumbled into his best team, which is to basically put lots of goals on the pitch and hope we score more than them, I'd be happy with that. Alli, Lallana and Rooney is not a bad creative axis. I also thought Walker was less awful then normal. It could be worse - we could just have lost to Uruguay with Jagielka/Baines/Gerrard/Henderson/Wellbeck etc...
