  • But gov.uk can blame it all on CV19

  • They can't blame the lorry queues on CV19.

The economic damage, sure, they will try. But once your supermarket stops selling items / the markup is huge / your small local shop cannot get you EU cheese anymore as there is not "trusted trader" scheme for small businesses (yet, another thing the Tories won't care about I'd say) it can no longer be denied.

By then "project fear" has become "project OH FUCK" of course. Sad state of affairs though, all we can hope for is a slow return to EU alignment, but with 4 years of Tories not sure that is possible.

  • Introduce rationing and see if all those banging on about 'Blitz spirit' know what it really means.

  • They can't blame the lorry queues on CV19

No, that'll be the Johnny Foreigner EU's fault for not approaching talks with Blighty in good faith... Or a Remoaner plot... Or, or, or...

Sorry, the dog ate my homework. Can I go and have my nice non-executive directorship now please.

    Or something.

  • Which non-exec are you going for, test and trace, AI blockchain ANPR border lorry magic...? :p

  • AI blockchain ANPR border lorry magic

    Sounds interesting. Tell me more...

  • I wish I had hallucinated that, but...

    https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/sep/18/brexit-consortium-fujitsu-irish-sea-contract-northern-ireland

And off the top of my head, it was the Fujitsu whitepaper that got roundly mocked. It is online if you can bear it.

Do a writeup you can probably squeeze your way in, after all, computers are MAGICK ;)

  • There’s been a wave of swivel eyed Brexits tweeting about how we cannot accept the customers union...tell me something has them rattled?

  • Given it's not on offer I think they can stand down.

  • E-passport gates already work with some non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals here and on the continent. It's a perfectly reasonable thing to agree to, and I think both sides would benefit from it.

  • It's a perfectly reasonable thing to agree to, and I think both sides would benefit from it.

No fucking chance it's going to happen then.

  • Do you have an example of somewhere within the Schengen Area that has e-gates that work for non EU/EEA/CH passport holders?

  • Helsinki.

Edit: here's a link that lists Japan as a country whose passport holders can enter through the e gates (in addition to the many countries that can use them to exit).

Edit 2: I was pretty sure it was available for South Koreans as well, and a bit more googling seems to confirm that.

  • It would have to have an agreement to oversee the data exchange, which would have to have oversight of (I suspect) the ECJ, which means it won't happen.

  • Interesting, thanks

    Trade talks restarted.

Meanwhile: UK meat must be shipped frozen next year, not enough freezing capacity.
Still not clear how NI protocol will work.
    Customs forms on everything
GB exports and imports have customs duty.
Forget about cheeky Amazon deals (might not be a bad thing...) as many are mainland EU.

But you know...don't fancy waiting in the airport queue. Priorities UK negotiation team...

(Though it sucks and probably will get sorted via individual country deals if needed)

  • And all improvements to EU settled status got voted down. No way to get a physical proof (not even for a fee) and still no exception for people that miss the deadline.

There's a guidance improvement that lets HO workers have some discretion, but you need to prove you are "vulnerable". If you are in a bad situation, you usually don't have the resources so it may help some, but it's really not a proper fix.

  • What are people views of the theory that the Boris is awaiting the outcome of the US election before there will be an movement on a deal with the EU.

Trump win, Boris walks away from an EU deal in the hope of signing a deal with the US. Obviously its not going to be that straight forward with having to get it passed democrats but I'm not sure there going to be think that far ahead.

Biden win, Boris signs a (shit) deal with the EU knowing full well that we will be at the back of the queue for a US trade deal and issues over the Irish board will be much more important.

  • Highly plausible and if you think it through, he may as well wait for the election result of the world's most powerful nation. You could imagine how much of an idiot he would be called, had he not.

  • most powerful nation

I guess it depends how your defining this, a trade deal with the EU is massively more important to the UK than any deal with the US could ever be under Trump or anybody else.

A deal with the US just means we become a dumping ground for there crap food, shit cars and access for there drug companies to bankrupt the NHS, ready for there private health care providers to move in.

  • The thing to remember is that Congress ultimately ratify all trade deals. If Trump wins again, on balance it is highly probable that the Republicans will be diminished in, or outright lose, the
Senate. The Democrats already control the House and I suspect that they may widen their margin.

Boris may be waiting on the gamble that Trump wins, they hold the Senate and then the House flips back to the Republicans after the mid terms in 2022. But that strikes me a long shot.

  • In trade negotiations the smaller parties come last, I guess he's counting on Trump to give him preference over the EU, which may make some sense, but he cannot avoid the Irish support block in the USA, which is cross-party.

  • bet boris is praying for a straight forward resolution in the us election

    #hangingchads

  • Meanwhile the ministry of trade has outdone its "Innovative Jams" tweet from years ago with "Soy Sauce will be cheaper after Brexit"

Nope it's 0% import now and 0% import after due to the UK Japan deal (which benefits Japan more)

Except it will have to come from Wales (not if you are in NI potentially) or Japan (more expensive) because Kikkoman is brewed in The Netherlands. (So I guess in NI we get that one then? Who knows?)
