• Just a little tubeless evangelism here for anyone finding this thread if researching making the leap. Only two puncture occasions (to my knowledge) to speak of, 4 months in. First occasion was the rear; heard the dreaded hissing, then spent the next 3 seconds wondering if it would seal (it did). Then, this morning, wet roads, cue audible hiss from front tyre - look down to see sealant shooting out, then sealed, all within a second with un-noticeable loss of pressure. Front of the bike looks like a prop from a gay porn film, but otherwise completely impressed with the tubeless experience so far. Come on @hippy, make the jump.

    TL/DR: Tubeless is the phuture

  • Much googling has suggested I'm better off going for the 21mm tape as the internal width is 20mm. Apparently 25mm will probably be too wide and might interfere with the bead seal.

21mm is also as close as possible to the 22mm suggestion from @chiroshi so this seems to be making sense.

Unfortunately I can't find Tesa 4289 in 21mm width so looks like I'll need to buy actual Stans.

Planning to buy Orange Seal sealant as Compass recommend it for their tyres and a lot of people seem to think it's better than Stans and will seal bigger holes.

Still not convinced about how I'm actually going to get the tyres to seal but have access to a compressor at my LBS so that will help I guess.

  • I've had nothing but a shit time with that stan's syringe. Screw it all the way onto the valve (with core removed), squirt the stuff in, unscrew it and loads of latex stuff just dribbles out as soon as you start unscrewing it. This is with valve at about 3 o'clock on the wheel. Think I'd be better off removing the screw on bit and squirting the fluid directly from syringe into valve.

  • loads of latex stuff just dribbles out as soon as you start unscrewing it.

Tried my trick of causing negative pressure in the tyre before squirting the stuff in?

  • Re; injecting the sealant, I've got a 20ml Stans' bottle which I just fill from a larger container. The nozzle is a perfect fit for the valve, so it's just a matter of having the wheel at about 5/7 o'clock and squeeze it in.

  • Nope! Will try next time :)

  • Pacenti? Would you like me to measure mine? The rim I mean. The tape on the wheel rim I mean.

    #doubledoubleentendree

  • SL25? Please if it's no bother (i.e. they don't have tyres on).

  • I have one that I really should sell so yeah, no tyre on it. I looked at it last night and thought I should measure it but didn't of course. Idiot. I can have a look tonight.

  • I will be.

This is the beauty of being a late adopter. I may be able to avoid the bukaki look you guys have all been rocking for the last two years.

  • So, 25mm tape in Pacenti SL25 600 x 20.

  • My evangelical moment turned into a slight nightmare. Although it sealed, the cut was so large it wouldn't stay sealed (only sealing when the cut came round for more fluid), but small enough that fixing it with 'string' was a PITA, having to make the hole a little bigger to fit the string tool through before removing it. Then, because I'd let all the air out, one side of the tyre came away from the rim bead, and a standard track pump isn't enough to inflate it now. Compressor here I come...

  • yes external patching is normally fine but if it is not and the tyre cant hold air then you have a choice bin the tyre or try an internal patch.

  • I used a worm this morning on my fusion x-guard (a big bit of flint became lodged and I got to the point where I had to stop as they was no air left or sealant it turned out). A worm plugged the hole well it did until it fell out. I put another worm in properly this time and it held air again then added some sealant at the shop . worms do work just push them in far enough.

Maxalami is another tubeless worm kit on the market. Got a few sample in the shop. two sizes of worms and much better applicator. http://www.maxalami.de/de_DE/

  • On a good tubeless setup the tyre wont come away from the rim. I was riding at 10 psi this morning, maybe less, it was quite flat this morning for a while as I wanted to see if the tyre stayed on the rim and the tyre stayed on. The rim is fine and so is the tyre. Some tubeless tyres though dont stay on rims that the IRC's do when the tyre is delfated that tells you it not the rim but the tyre or that tyre rim combo. I would find a tyre that locks to your rims. it could be the rims too I have found that before.

This is where other sealants other stans sometimes seal the hole that stans can't but all sealants have there limits.

  • New Maxxis...

Do any of the big players actually make tubeless other than Schwalbe?

  • Cheers for the tips. Prior to this, I'd not had any trouble seating the tyre on the rim, but I deliberately took one side off, as I was wary of damaging the rim/tape with the little screwdriver tool for the hole. It was only when I went to reseat it did the troubles start. Got a compression chamber on order, so hoping that'll sort it, otherwise it's new tyre time (sigh).

Those Maxalami's look v similar to the weldtite ones I used.

Do you not feel the bump of the sticking out worm when riding?

  • I sometimes dream that a bike geek somewhere on the internet maintains a list but I have yet to find it. When I looked into it - very briefly - I didn't get much beyond Schwalbe, IRC, and Panaracer. And now Maxxis.

  • I've not got my sealant yet so I'm yet to test anything but I basically want:

    • the best heavy duty 32mm slick for miles, miles and more miles of training and commuting
    • the fastest ultra race tyre which although needs to be durable should be fast too. ie. Pro One
  • I'm happy with my Pro Ones and reckon they would be a good choice for the race tyre. I've not had any disasters with them yet and just a couple of punctures that have needed 'worming'.

I too am looking - albeit not that actively - for something around a 32mm to convert my commuter so will be interested in how you get on. And will similarly post up any progress I might make.

  • @cycleclinic has some IRC stuff I'll probably try if I get through the Pro One:
    https://thecycleclinic.co.uk/collections/road-tyres

Anyone tried using non-tubeless tyres setup for tubeless?

  • At road pressures, don't do it. More supple sidewalls in non-tubeless tyres mean blowouts are more likely. (So I've heard on the internet, never tried it personally)

Hutchinson tyres are popular over the pond and have a few tubeless readies, panaracer also.
