  • Wow sweet, did you go to a frame builder?

  • No, just a local eeh turner? Lathe-operator? Dunno which one makes sense.

  • Okay, update time:

A lot of stuff has arrived. Columbus air frames have arrived! They are so pretty, I didn't realise how skinny the tubes were.

So, it appears that the track fork doesn't have a long enough steerer to fit the Tommasini but the bio bike does so it will be getting that one instead, not perfect so I'll probably try and get one made.

The seat post situation hasn't worked out as planned. The Shimano 600ax one arrived however it is a little too fat to fit in. I'm contemplating filling off 1mm on each side to make it fit. The post is really thick so it shouldn't make a difference structurally.

I've gathered most of the parts I need now for the initial build, I'll take some pics later today. Still waiting on the cranks and picking up a set of c-record pedals tomorrow. I'll be heading to Muswell Bike Jumble tomorrow so I'll be keeping my eye out for anything which takes my interest.

  • ha, you're becoming a bit of the Air king now.

  • True... It's all about those aero gains

  • Goodies

Cinelli 1A, c-record headset (non pista), c-record bb.

Sand it down, it will be fine. Ive done the same to stems/seatposts to fit french sized forks and seat tubes. Just get loads of sandpapers and a file (I got one you can borrow) and remember to keep checking you've sanded it down enough

  • Yeah that is probably what I'll do, for now anyway. Here's a pic comparing the air and shimano posts. Air is on the left

  • That will require a lot of sanding.... better get the flat file out. I wouldn't bother to be honest, that's way too much material to remove. A seatpost that only touches the inside of the seattube at certain points will direct force to those spots causing (a higher than normal) stress on the material. Could lead to cracks.

  • Hmm I see, I'll leave it for now, I don't really have the money to build it now anyway. I'll find how much it will cost to get one custom made in the mean time..

  • ted james could probably make you a custom one from steel which would be cool

  • I sent him an email a little while back and got no reply..

  • Couldn't a machinist turn down the part that is going to be inserted? Looks like one could get almost full contact of the seat tube with the post (ie like only the sharpish front would be missing)?

  • As in have them reshape the shimano post? So that it is the same shape as the front part of the air post?

Another option that I've spotted on Instagram is to have a regular seatpost altered to fit by a frame builder. Rychtarski has done one for someone, it would mean that you'd still have the saddle mount on top.

  • Some major progress today. Almost ready to ride, all that I need is a front wheel (700c without tyre in the pictures). C-record pedals also fitted, I cheaped out though and just got mks cages and some cheap Christope straps. Seatpost is shimano 600 which I'll change out for a campag one once I find one which is reasonably priced.

Now that I've sold my Anchor, I have a decent pool of money to sort out some proper wheels. The question is, do I get a set of sheriff star hubs and build them up, or do I go on the hunt for a set of discs?

  • Sheriff means classic. Double disc is hhsb badass. Do both? :D

  • looks nice. Pweas not disks.

  • Hmm I think I'm going to get a nice spoked wheelset and then add discs in the future, so I can swap them out when I want to.

Should I consider a thing else other then sheriff stars for hubs?

  • Just been reading about how fragile sheriff stars are and it has me doubting if they are a good choice. Reallllly don't want to be dropping £3-400 on a wheelset and then having the hubs crack.

May try and get my hands on a set of the low flange version. I'm finding it had to find any pista versions though. It looks like campagnolo still make a very similar 'record' version new but that isn't really what I want

  • These are so pretty though...

  • Sheriff stars are nice but not worth the premium and the chances of them cracking as you see are high. I would just get hubs that match the cranks which I believe would be these? -

    http://sprockets.uk.com/campagnolo-rear-record-p-track-hubs-small-flange/

    or maybe @ObiWomKenobi 's wheelset ?

Also possibly get some panto stuff? Link

The first link are road but I think for the price you could potentially convert them to a faux track set with some effort. edit actually dont get them(deleted the links), as its that seller that clearly engraves stuff himself selling it for mad money profit.

  • Would the hubs that you've linked be acceptable though? They are redesigned versions of the c-record version so not exactly the same. I can't find any c-record low flange hubs for sale though.

I know of a set of sheriff star hubs for the same price of a new set of low flange ones. If the price is right then maybe I should just go with sheriff stars and be a careful while riding? They are much prettier hubs..

The cranks I have are 2nd gen c-record, I'd prefer to use track cranks then use bodged pantoed road ones. My look for a pantoed chainring though and probably a stem (Tommasini sell 1A's but cost about £180).

  • I've ridden Sheriffs for years with no problems, just DON'T lace them radially!

  • The build does deserve Panto
