  • over the horizons? yes. I really enjoyed using them, but they were finicky tyre pressure wise.
I don't weigh much, so anything over 40psi was a skittish. G-ones however, even over inflated, they just inspired confidence. Even pulled back a couple of lowsides and I'm shit at cornering.

Depends how off road your riding is. Higher than 50% road? G-ones. Vice versa.

  • Just buy a bike that's actually designed to be ridden off road?

  • Shots fired.

  • It´s now waiting for a new custom curved fork.

BTW, those using Tektro R559s how do you feel them? My braking power has dropped about 20-30% since I switched to them. Also they are super flexy, I mean I do feel a bit uncomfy when braking hard...

  • Found the R559s ok. Brake feel is definitely decreased. Performance is fine.

I do have the slotted shoes (can’t remember if they’re standard) and have changed the front pads to swisstop blues (I had some spare). I’d recommend Koolstops for a winter/rain bike.

I have used it loaded, but not more than 15kg. Bike+rider weight not more than 95kg I guess.

  • I´ve got Kool Stop grey pads on the front brake installed before I even tested the bike and still it doesn´t feel right. With the previous 105 80´s brakes I could brake as hard as to the point that the rear wheel would elevate from the ground, something totally impossible with the R559S.

I think I´ll give a go to Kool Stop salmons and see if there´s any improvement.

  • I just swapped from Thunder Burts to Gravel Kings on my Functional bike, as I'm doing more road on that bike at the moment. They feel fast but they are skiddy, accidental whip skid when I came round a corner and was faced with an approaching car on a narrow country lane a little while ago. I am not dead but yikes!

  • I'm finding mine pretty skiddy as well. Limited traction up dusty/dirty stuff out of the saddle and on the road when I jam on the brakes.

(Mine are 700×32 though but I assume same compound and all that)

  • swapped from Thunder Burts

There's your problem. TB fanz forever.

I liked the GK's (prefer them to Horizons) but I found them very temperamental to pressure like the Horizons. I low-sided mine on a corner I was very familiar with. Lowering pressure helped massively. Try that.

  • Yeah Thunder Burts are an amazing tyre. I was blown away when I first tried them and have been using them for a few years now. But as my ride on this bike tend to be 70/30 tarmac/off-road I thought I'd go for a big slick tyre instead.

  • I've got 42mm Grand Bois Hetres on another bike. They are great, feel plenty fast enough for me, very grippy and sure-footed. I'd like to try the Compass equivilant but the Hetres are taking ages to wear out, plus Compass are $$$

  • Next set'll be G-One Speed for me as I got some when there was that SJS pricing error. Need to give the GravelKings a proper test but so far not massively impressed...

  • Yeah, I've lowered the pressure and they feel better.

  • 5th puncture today with Gravel kings today, they're shit. Thank god for tubeless.

What do I get instead? G-One Speed? Marathon Supreme? Maxxis Detonator?

  • G-One Speed

    Always.

  • Only problem is they're only 1.5" or 2" when id like 1.75"

  • I've got one 1.5" G-One Speed you can have relatively cheap, and one that may or not be dead you can have free. Minimal miles.

  • whatsapp me the deets pls

  • Got a pair of brand new Marathon Supreme in 1.6" with the reflective tape peeled off if you're interested if you're interested.

  • Tubeless? Will keep that in mind thanks

  • Same issue I had as well. I settled for the 1.5". They performed as amazingly as ever. Now finding an excuse to build something with either the 2" ones or the proper fatties.
Any excuse to use more G-ones. My favourite tyre hands down.

  • Have a look at the Schwalbe Almotion tire.
I think (from experience) they are great tires. Fast ánd durable. Real fast actually. More fast then the Supreme anyway ...
Strangely there is not much talking about the Almotin on this forum. It is such a good tire. I peeled off the reflective bit for a more 'cool' look. I know it is stupid but it is just the way I like it. :-)
