  • How do you find their puncture resistance?

  • I think the round spots in the centre of the tread are just for decoration.

  • Here the update of mine before a small trip on the GTM :

    Replaced the tires with some wtb resolutes, they are very good on the trails and not so slow on tarmac.
    And I changed the zipp sl-88 to some funn g-wide in 48. I have to tweak the position but I feel already good.

  • Looks nice! Agree with you on the Resolutes, they roll really well on tarmac considering how grippy they are on the looser stuff.

  • I just found WTB Resolute 700c tyres that tick all my boxes in offroad riding - big, but would fit in Pickenflick, good on hardpack and decent in mud as well. Therefore probably I will buy them and the second wheelset would be relegated to almost entirely road duties with some occasional gravel shortcut. For this, does it still make sense to go for 650b road plus? I have a feeling 700x32c Maxxis Re-Fuse (which is available for like 60% of Horizon's price currently) would make it, while lower mass and narrower profile might help me keep up on road group rides. Am I right?

  • so now i have my new road bike with discs,
    my previous jack of all trades "road" bike (cx boardman pro) is now downgraded as a rainy commuter........
    its a bastard rear 9speed (shadow XTR rear mech, 32T cassette) /front (10 speed triple thats never worked properly) + cable / hydro TRP discs

    but ive got an inklin ....... for some gravel......so my cheap as chips changes involve

    • single up front (i already have a 34T NW single ring) = no cost.
    • sunrace CMS990 9AX 11-40T alloy carrier cassette = £34.99 - ebay
    • those funky flared handlebars (alpkit love mud bomber) = £25.00 - alpkit
    • go full hydro single front

    sell my ultegra triple
    sell my carbon drop bars
    sell my trp hydro front

    i have a spare set of disc wheels , shall we say "robust" - that will have the gravel tyres on and current discs will have roady commuter tyres, swaps when required.

    please feel free to shoot down any and all above ideas.

    will have to wash it to to make it as nice as the pics above.

  • No punctures insofart, however for some reason I rarely ever get punctured.

    The rear is just starting to show a slight bald after 2,000km (including 1000km of heavy touring on and off road).

  • I ride the Clements on and off road and so far theyve proven to be pretty tough. They do hum a bit but its not loud..

  • How are wide 650b tyres behaving when road climbing out of the saddle? I have heard some reports that there might be some unpleasant floaty feel at low pressures in such conditions.

  • I'm not sure I'd say floaty but they feel, and are, a lot slower than skinny high pressure road tyres. But I have set a few PRs descending on my Resolutes despite running them at around 25 psi.

    Fine, it's actually nice to feel a lots of grip as oppose to skinny tyres on loose surface.

  • On loose surface it's expected that wider and lower pressure will be better, I asked specifically about road cause my idea was to have 700c wheelset for offroad and 650b for mostly road with some occasional gravel.
    After some thinking I am now favouring 2 700c wheelsets - the terrain one with Resolutes and road one with 28c road tyres tubed that I could swap for winter with studded tyres for snow fun without the resealing hassle. I am wondering whether I should go for real 28c road tyre (like Hutchinson Fusion 5 Performance that I found for just 16 EUR) or Voyager Hyper that gets lots of nice reviews and seems quite quick for a more touring-oriented tyre.

  • loose surface, not gravel, loose surface are pretty common on the road in the UK.

    They're fine to climb, it just feel less stiff rather than squirmy once you got the pressure spot on for you.

  • You mean some debris that is laying in tarmac? Or tarmac that consists of more small stones than tarmac itself and therefore quite rough?

  • Alright, fortunately most of roads I ride in Poland are in better shape than that, but still sometimes I encounter something similar and indeed low pressure and width is the only way to survive it.

  • Lovely stuff!! I borrowed my mates arkose for a few days as I am thinking of replacing my road bike for an all roady thing because I miss my niner.

    I just couldn't get on with it. nice bike n all and it does what it says on the tin...But it just feels life less and maybe a little boring? I guess that's just aluminum though tbf...

    It also handled like a barge with a 100mm stem on!

  • I am really liking the Ritchey outback atm. Just a shame it doesnt have mudguard mounts?

    Any other options out there for a steel all road bike that can take 700c x 40c tyres, decent geo (not cross geo) and has mudguard mounts and potentially good for touring?
