  • The horizontal sliding drop outs of my 2016 Strggler are driving me nuts recently. Their design flaws have always been obvious to me, but I am recently hauling more weight around (panniers, 2 racks, bike seat + daughter, etc) so have to push a bit more than usual on the pedals, especially when starting from fully stopped, which causes the rear wheel to slip more than usual.

I am already using Hope mtb skewers, done up to the limit of what I can then re-open by hand. I was using Halo hex key skewers in the past, but I stopped after having snapped some 4-5 of them due to overtightening.

TL;DR, what are people doing to avoid wheel slip with their dropouts predating this update ?

  • If you're not running SS, the axle should be slammed forward to begin right, yeh?

  • Shimano skewer.

Which side/way is the wheel slipping, I though you could recreate the above on the original straggler as the dropouts were threaded at the front and rear?

Another option is a couple of monkey nuts to keep the wheel up against the front of the en dropout

  • Hope skewers suck, shimano ftw

  • One forward and one back is exactly how I had my 2014 Straggler set up for hauling my 100+++kg around on a singlespeed for a few years, so I'd do that

Does yours not have a rearwards facing ( bolt pointing towards the rear ) threaded hole on the driveside?

    Salsa skewers fwiw

  • Yes just get a better skewer

  • Loads of great answers!

@JVBulman geared and they are slightly back from fully forward for tyre clearance to the mudguards. Although now I am temporarily running skinnier tyres, I could push them forward again.

@atk @BareNecessities Drive side is slipping under pedal power, my screws are both at the rear at the moment, don't think the dropouts are threaded on the front as well, must check. Still would be a pain to remove and re-adjust every time I need to take the wheel off. Monkey nuts? Tell me more

Anyone has a pair of Deore skewers? I think I had them for some time and was happy about them.

Do you do that very often? It's only a matter of unwinding the bolt out of the way, which takes a few seconds :-)

I do agree that Hope skewers are not the best out there

  • I've got a Straggler post dropout update, so does have the forward facing thread on the drive side. Like you the skewer sits a bit further back for mudguard clearance. It is a bit of a pain having to remove the bolt when taking the wheel out, but it was already a tricky operation with the guards. So I'd say it only adds a small amount of extra inconvenience :-)

  • I don't think monkey nuts would solve forward movement, but a hurdy gurdy might https://surlybikes.com/parts/hurdy_gurdy

  • What's the rear spacing? If 135mm, I have a XT qr skewer in the parts box.

  • 135 yeah, will message

  • Had the bike for 6y.. never bothered to look at the front of the dropout!

    Thanks all

  • I am already using Hope mtb skewers,

    There's your issue.

  • What had you missed, the dropout bolt? You still need to ditch the Hope skewer though, nothing grips like a good old Shimano xt one.

  • yeah i agree, Hope skewers are garbage

  • I had missed the threaded hole to the front of the dropout that allowed to swap the bolt from rear mounted to front on the drive side

  • absolutely this a million times. frankly, I bloody hate those dropouts; I had them changed for bogo vertical QR ones a while back!
Not a lot beats a shimano QR!

  • I'm looking for a frameset similar to a crosscheck but with a long headtube... Anyone any tips:)?

  • spa or thorn?

  • Long haul trucker,packrat, All city, planet-x/on-one…

Or just use a few spacers and flip the stem

  • Which on one? Pack rat is 650b

  • Check out the new version of the disc trucker, has been redesigned with a taller head tube, only problem is I think you can only get 56cm+ in 700c and smaller sizes are 26”

Kaffenback is a good frame too

  • Salsa Fargo is very tall, discs tho

  • Good evening. Does anyone know if I’ll be able to fit 55mm PDW mudguards in the back of my Straggler? Thanks
