Field Cycles custom disc road build

  • Yeh, if I was dropping a load of money on a frame I'd be double checking aswell!

I'm not sure whether the proposed geometry looks good or bad; I don't have any experience with frame design. The only thing that looks strange to me is the fact your cannondale has a longer head tube and an upright stem; whereas the new frame has a shorter head tube, and I'd assume minimal spacers and a negative rise stem (for aesthetic reasons?)

Will the above work if your Cannondale is your ideal fit?

  • I think that'll be fine.

If anything I find I can be very slightly too upright at the moment (the position is as good as I can get on a bike that's the wrong size for me!) so I think the drop will help (plus will be a little more 'racey' which I'm after, without challenging comfort too much).

  • Harry has 3 builds to start and EuroBike to get prepared for/do and then we should start start sorting out tubing and more specific details...

  • Deposit paid.

    Geometry sorted.

    Tubes being discussed now.

    Getting pretty damn exciting.

  • So tube discussions have started in earnest.

The rear triangle is proving a little problematic as we are trying to work out the flat mount hydro disc issue (wanted to us an Enve fork but they are not working with flat mount yet, and won't for the foreseeable it seems...).

For now, this is the idea (I made this image, not Harry at Field) ˅

  • And the choice of ovalised or standard for the TT is troubling me (together with whether to use internal cabling).

  • Getting along well with this now after a number of delays.

The front triangle fabrication started...and stopped fairly rapidly when, when mitring, Harry noticed a hairline crack in the 931 downtube (the second time this has happened to him with Reynolds stainless - perhaps bad luck).

Given this, the downtube will now be Columbus XCR instead (the top tube will remain ovalised 853 as he hasn't had any issues with non-stainless Reynolds).

In addition, there had been numerous delays caused by the flat mount solution at the back as Field have custom designed a solution (CNC as usual with them) and had issues with the guy fabricating for them. They moved it to someone more reliable so, fingers crossed, the solution will be ready and the rear triangle can be completed imminently.

The wiring hoses will be internal (in the downtube) then under the chain stay to the disc caliper; the Di2 will also all be internal.

Given the timing, I've now started consulting with Tom (the design chap there) about paint so that paint can be cracked on with as soon as the frame has been fabricated.

  • Is this on the back burner or is it full speed ahead whilst you're recovering? If you can't ride bikes you might as well build them...

  • This actually on while I'm recovering and should coincide with my recovery fairly well...

Paint design is underway and front triangle is done (rear will start soon)!

  • My old frame is pretty much done...

  • Bugger. What caused that? Impact or tempus gently fugiting away?

  • Hit from the rear (a hit and run as the guy didn't stop), which then pushed me off course and into the back of a parked truck.

Jacked the handlebars at the last minute to try and scrub speed off, hit the truck bang on the headtube, my left arm and head.

@TM put a 'man down' thread on here about it (thanks again mate for keeping people up to date!).

  • Glad to hear plans are moving ahead with the field, should give you something positive and exciting to focus on!

Is it too soon to suggest the paint nods a head to a kamikaze plane following your recent exploits...

  • Never too soon mate.

I had to laugh when, laying bloody and with the most comically snapped arm I've seen, the Policeman asked me in Japanese, "Didn't you brake in time?"

The Police can be clueless in the UK but that was pretty special!

  • 😱 😱 😱 😱

Glad you're alright, such a shame about that frame tho

edit: well, you know, healthy enough to type...

  • Yeah man.

Frame was destined to be my race bike but can't see me racing much from now!

  • Totally forgot about this! Dis gun be good etc.

Echo-ing TM's worlds but such a perfect time (sadly) to commission a custom while you are recovering.

  • if you're that attached to it (I would be), maybe see if there are any carbon composite folks around you willing to cut and shut it back up? I got my Supersix sorted for comparatively little cash.

  • maybe see if there are any carbon composite folks around you willing to cut and shut it back up?

    Whhhhaaaaattttttt

Echo comments above - sad end for that frame. But it is the end. Really. It's done.

  • Yeah I agree. It is totally fucked.

And @amey , good timing for the custom indeed.

  • Custom CNC flat mount solution for the rear is finally done.

Rear end to be fabricated, then into paint, then to me!

  • How's it going, any updates?

  • I should've posted here but, after massive delays in sorting the custom CNC flat mount solution, the frame fabrication is now complete.

Now the masking for the paint is going ahead and, fingers crossed, I should be riding this relatively soon!

  • That's incredibly neat, looking forward to seeing the full build.

  • Dropouts are looking good.
