  • Haha.
I've been looking at rear racks today. =[
They just don't look as good.
I wonder if pizza could be transported on a rear rack though? Probably...
As much as I like a good calzone...
Andy, as a man well versed with racks and panniers and such...
Any suggestions on a nice looking lightweight rear rack?

  • I've kind of lost interest in front racks, maybe I just don't buy enough pizza... Got a Wald basket on the recently built hackbike as I had it lying around/it was cheap, sold the porteur rack and just have a front lowrider to bang on the Straggler if/when that sort of capacity is required. Wald do big, light front basket-rack things that mount on axles - not pretty but lighter than the Soma. Think other axle mounted options are TCB or Cetma which both mean US postage... I think @spotter linked to a euro rack earlier today in a different thread, might be worth a look how that mounts...

Lightest affordable rack is probably Tubus Fly, fine for panniers but not great for strapping shit on top. They do bigger ones made from Ti which are nice, light, functional but mega pricey. I think Tortec or Topeak do one that isn't mega heavy and has a reasonable platform on top, not really sure...

  • Cheers for the info!
Yeah, if the fork had the right mounts a lowrider would be great.
Was looking at the tubus fly earlier as well, does look pretty good and could maybe handle a pizza... But pizza isn't the be all and end all... I don't eat it that much (not enough).

I'll end up with a rear pannier at this rate...

  • If you really need a front rack, is a fork change an option?
Thorn do a very nice steel fork, available in several colours, with enough mounts.

  • Yeah I thought about it but I want to keep to my budget (kinda...)
So I am gonna have to settle for a rear rack of some sort.
I'd prefer a rack that can support a rack bag on top rather than a pannier bag but we shall see when it comes down to it and I have to compromise...

  • Aye, maybe sell yer carbon fork and get a thorn fork and front rack, nitto m18 is lovely, but could only really carry a 9" pizza.

  • I was going to suggest swapping forks and try and flog my disc trucker for at the same time (not sure what the Equilibrium's a-c is, but offset the same) but figured it might be too much of a weight penalty for the whole build.

  • Think disc trucker fork is about right for the Equilibrium, I looked at when I had my 853.

  • Yeah ideally I wanna try and keep the wait down as this will double as a winter road bike without the rack.
    Ideally I'd buy two bikes...

  • Rear rack and pannier gonna add some weight, do some sums before you commit, may not be a lot in it.
Having said that, I have just put the carbon fork back on my cdf, and gone with a saddlepack, the ride is so much better.

  • I'll be removing the rack for the road rides so not too worried about the weight it may add 'temporarily'. By road rides I mean fast winter rides. I wore a rim through this winter so wanted disc brakes. But I also want a commuter... So I'm trying to get both in one...

  • The blackburn rack I got on the croix comes with p clips and is designed to fit on any fork, even suspension forks.

  • Even carbon forks? I'd be scared to clamp onto carbon.

  • This is sapience brand rack. £15ish
I don't know whether it is available easily in Europe, but here (indonesia) it is easy to find.

  • The pelago @spotter linked can be fitted on the dropout also (at least they claim it)

  • Thanks all! Will check out the ones I've had suggested and see if I can get away with it!

  • This kit may be my saviour.

Wonder if it works with the pelago rack.

  • They are for the back, you might need to chop and rethread the skewer

  • Oh! Missed that bit!
    Nevermind!

  • Bike shop should have a hacksaw and die, wouldn't be too tricky to do and should work...

  • Haha, it probably will work yeah but, after thinking about when I get a flat and have to take the wheel off... I might just get a rear rack... The frame has eyelets and mounts for rack and mudguard on the rear.

  • You'll lose most of the dampening of the carbon fork with a QR mounted front rack.
Could be good for disc braking tough, less flex

  • This project stalled for a while but it's now had some movement.
The Shimano 105 5800 groupset has arrived. Brakeset sold and TRP Spyre brakeset ordered. Should arrive this week.
The next purchase is a pair of Aksium disc wheels.
Then the final piece of the puzzle... The frameset...
The new genesis equilibrium disc frameset looks awesome but won't be available for another 3 months or there abouts...
I'm now being tempted by a canyon inflite as its reduced at the moment... But isn't steel and doesn't have rack mounts...

  • The TRP Spyre brakes arrived today and they look awesome (I'm sure they also perform pretty well)
Anyone know if the stock pads are half decent or not?

I'm having some serious frame doubt. The Planet X kaffenback is £150 which is just stupidly cheap. Can I justify waiting 3 months for the genesis and spend £400 more...? I can afford the genesis but is it £400 better than the kaffenback...?

  • Never had a problem with the stock pads, they wear a bit quicker when wet n gritty, but nothing to worry about, just give em a clean every now and then.
As a lover of Genesis bikes (apart from the colour schemes) I would say wait, or go for a 2015 model?
